Albret (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albret was the family of the Lords of Albret in southwest France from the 11th century.

history

With Arnaud-Amanieu d'Albret († 1401), the main line appeared on the national stage for the first time in the second half of the 14th century. In 1382 he was enfeoffed with the County of Dreux for his military services . His son Charles I. d'Albret (X 1415) was the nominal commander of the French troops at the Battle of Azincourt as Constable of France .

In the course of the 15th century, the counties of Gavre , Périgord , Castres and the vice-counties of Limoges and Tartas came into the possession of the family. The height of its power reached the Albret with Jean d'Albret († 1516), who, through his marriage to Catherine of Navarre With king of Navarre was (however, only the title of king from 1512 referring to the part of Navarre, north of the Pyrenees was ). Their son was King Henry II of Navarre (Henri d'Albret), who inherited from his mother the counties Foix and Bigorre as well as the vice county of Béarn .

However, the most famous member of the family is Heinrich's daughter, Queen Johanna III. von Navarra (Jeanne d'Albret, † 1572), the mother of the future French king Henry IV , through whom the entire property of the family from Foix to Navarre came into the possession of the French crown. With her, the main line of the family died out.

The Albret also owned the County of Rethel from 1491–1549 and died out completely with a branch line in 1678 as Counts of Marennes.
