The Old Limburg is the ruins of a hilltop castle at 272  m above sea level. NN high foothills of the Kaiserstuhl , the Limberg , 40 meters above the Rhine in the district of the municipality of Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl in the district of Emmendingen in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The spur castle is located on a mountain plateau that already housed a Neolithic hilltop settlement of the Michelsberg culture , a Celtic city in the 1st century BC (attested by a mighty protective wall ) and an early Roman fort in the times of Emperor Augustus .

The Old Limburg is probably a foundation of the Franks , its origin is probably in the 6th or 7th century. The stone round tower , which has a diameter of five meters, suggests that the facility was modernized in the 10th century. Presumably to better monitor the crossing of the Rhine, the Old Limburg was replaced in the 11th century by the Limburg Castle, built in the immediate vicinity, and then fell into oblivion. In the spring of 1983, when the upper edge of the quarry was demolished, the eastern half of the round tower was lost.

description

Area of the outer bailey

The Old Limburg, the original name of which has not been passed down, consisted of an outer bailey and a main castle . The main castle was protected in the southwest and southeast by Roman quarries and in the northeast by a triple wall. Half of the foundations of the round tower and the three earth walls have been preserved from it. The outer bailey, of which a remnant of the outer bailey can still be seen, extended to the northeast on the mountain plateau.
