history

Largest section of the wall, located northwest below the site of the presumed former residential tower .
Coat of arms of the Lords of Endingen

The castle, built around 1200, was owned by the Koler von Endingen - a line of the Lords of Endingen - as a fief of the St. Margarethen Collegiate Monastery in Waldkirch . The castle was destroyed for the first time in 1278. In 1321 the castle was then destroyed by the Lords of Üsenberg with the help of the citizens of Endingen in the Kaiserstühler War (1320-1322). The castle was not rebuilt and the von Endingen family emigrated to Strasbourg in 1333 and apparently renounced the fiefdom. Waldkirch Abbey then transferred the fiefdom to the town of Endingen between 1419 and 1494.

The castle, which was separated from the rising mountain ridge by a mighty neck ditch and another ditch from the Spornspitze, consisted of a core castle and a bailey to the north. It was removed by a quarry. Small remains of the wall and the moats are still preserved from the former castle complex.
