Angus ( Gaelic Aonghas ) has been one of 32 Council Areas in Scotland since 1996  . The Angus area borders Aberdeenshire , Perth and Kinross and the city of Dundee and the North Sea .

From 1975 to 1996 Angus formed a district of the Scottish region of Tayside . Angus is also a traditional county and as such includes the city of Dundee. The traditional county of Angus was called Forfarshire until 1928 and is bordered by Kincardineshire to the northeast, Aberdeenshire to the north, Perthshire to the west and Fife to the south. Angus is also one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland today .

Angus consists of three geographic regions. In the north and west the topography is mountainous. This region with the five Angus glens is sparsely populated and characterized by agriculture. In the south and east, the area is hilly and more densely populated. This is where the larger towns and the city of Dundee are located. Between these main regions is the Strathmore Valley, a fertile, agricultural area known for the Angus cattle .

Angus is divided into eight constituencies ("wards"), each with three or four seats. The Angus Council has 28 seats, which are distributed among the parties as follows:
