Annette Caspar , also Pauline (Polly) Annelies Maria Caspar , later Mac Lean , Mc-Lean-Casper or Caspar-Mc. Lean , then Bracegirdle (born January 23, 1916 in Berlin ; † October 23, 2008 in Gislingham , Suffolk ), was a German - British painter , graphic artist , wall designer and ceramicist .

Life

Annette Caspar was born in Berlin on January 23, 1916. In 1918 she moved to Hamburg with her family . From 1933 to 1934 she studied there at the Hansische Hochschule für Bildende Künste under Hugo Meier-Thur . After a study trip to Switzerland, she worked for nine months as a graphic designer in the advertising department of Montblanc in Hamburg.

From 1935 to 1938 she studied at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts in Berlin. After a semester of commercial graphics , she switched to fine art with Adolf Strübe . During the holidays she did studies on the Baltic island of Hiddensee . From 1938 to 1940 she designed covers for the magazine Elegante Welt . From 1940 to 1942 she continued her studies with Adolf Strübe. From 1942 onwards she created drawings of plant pests for a chemical factory. This was followed by "war important" work. On March 26, 1945, three weeks before the start of the last battle for Berlin , she fled from Berlin to Lake Constance .

She married the painter and sculptor Harry Mac Lean , who was also a student of Strübe, and lived in Heidelberg until 1950 . In Heidelberg's Heiliggeistkirche she restored early Gothic frescoes with him . In 1948 and 1949 she was a member of the Baden Artists Association . In 1950 she separated from her husband and then returned to Hamburg with her three-year-old son. From 1953 it was recorded in the Hamburg address book as A. Mac Lean at Sierichstraße 156 in Hamburg-Winterhude , where members of the Caspar family lived since 1932. Later, until 1961, she was recorded as Annette Mc-Lean-Casper in the Hamburg address book at the same address. From 1950 to 1968 she was a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Hamburg and GEDOK . In Hamburg she received a total of 34 orders for art in architecture . She had a lifelong friendship with the Hamburg painter Theo Wilhelm (1912–2005).

In 1961 she traveled to Greece for the first time . In 1965 she met the former Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Australian Navy Warwick Seymour Bracegirdle (born December 22, 1911 in Newcastle , Australia). From 1965 she lived on the Greek island of Paros . In 1968 she moved to England and lived in Hampshire for three years . There she married on September 20, 1969 in the registration office of Gosport Warwick Seymour Bracegirdle, who previously divorced his first wife on August 5, 1969 in Winchester . In 1971 she moved with him into a house in Lodge Cottage in Gislingham, Suffolk, to which a studio was later added. From 1975 she had her own pottery . On April 30, 1975, the UK Home Office registered her oath of allegiance following the issuance of her naturalization certificate by the UK Foreign Office.

Her husband died on March 14, 1993 at her home in Gislingham and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Gislingham. In 1995 she gave up ceramic work, but continued to create drawings and watercolors . She also died on October 23, 2008 in her home in Gislingham and was buried on November 3 in St. Mary's Cemetery in Gislingham.
