The working group for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly cities, communities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia e. V. (AGFS) is a Krefeld- based association of municipalities and districts that is committed to improving the conditions for non-motorized private transport.

history

The association was founded in 1993 as a working group for bicycle-friendly cities by 13 members in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 2007 the AGFS has represented the concept of local mobility, which encompasses all forms of non-motorized mobility and defines the “city as a space for living and moving”. Since 2012, pedestrian and bicycle traffic have been given equal priority in the new AGFS name. The share of cycling in cities is to be increased to an average of 25% and the modal split share of non-motorized individual transport - in the sense of the desired local mobility - to over 60%.

The AGFS was the first firmly institutionalized form of cooperation between municipalities in Germany to promote bicycle traffic and local mobility. It is a role model for similar associations that have also been founded in Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria , Brandenburg , Hesse , Lower Saxony , Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia .

former members

As the only municipality so far, the city of Marl , co-founder of the community, was not renewed membership at the end of 2014. The reason was, among other things, the neglect of the cycle path network and the lack of commitment to promoting cycle traffic.

Company FahrRad!

In 2005, AGFS, with the support of the then Ministry of Economics, Energy, Building, Housing and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, set up the “Company FahrRad!”, A strategic alliance of companies and associations from the bicycle industry to promote bicycle traffic in Germany . The most important goal is that cycling is given greater consideration in the planning of roads, paths and squares as well as in financing. For this purpose, a continuous transfer of knowledge takes place between AGFS, decision-makers in municipalities and the state, and members from business. The alliance is intended to serve as a platform for the transfer of knowledge and an exchange of ideas, as well as an instrument to make the great potential of the bicycle as a means of transport, in tourism, environmental protection and health care clear to politics, business and associations.

The AGFS regularly organizes specialist conferences and congresses. Every year at the end of February, the AGFS specialist congress is held at Messe Essen as part of the “Fahrrad” trade fair. A large AGFS exhibition stand also shows the range of local mobility funding. As part of its public relations work, the AGFS appears at events of other institutions. B. in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport organized a joint stand at the NRW-Tag. The AGFS has prepared, organized and carried out a large number of campaigns for its member municipalities. In addition to the traffic safety campaign “Love needs distance”, the longest running campaign to date is “Only poor chandeliers drive without light”, which is carried out every autumn on more than 50 days of action. In addition to excursions and a regular planning workshop, the AGFS is a partner of the German Bicycle Prize , which is awarded alternately at the AGFS Congress in Essen and at the National Bicycle Traffic Congress of the BMVI with different venues.
