Asse is a Belgian municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant . Until the first half of the 20th century, Assche was the official spelling of the city name. It includes the sub-municipalities of Bekkerzeel, Kobbegem, Mollem, Relegem and Zellik and is the capital of the canton of Asse.

The city is on the Dendermonde - Brussels - Geraardsbergen and Lokeren - Brussels - Poperinge railway lines . Asse station is frequented by around 110 trains every day.

history

Asse was first mentioned in 1015 when Count Lambert I von Löwen exchanged the village of Buvrinnes in Hainaut (now part of Binche ) for Asse. The area was settled much earlier, presumably by the Nervier . Since the middle of the 1st century, a Roman road connected Asse with Bavay , the capital of the Nervians. A Roman army camp is said to have been located in Asse itself.

During the Carolingian era , Asse belonged to the Gau Brabant. From 1085/1086 Asse was part of the county of Brabant under the Counts of Leuven.

Because of its economically and militarily favorable location, the place has been occupied and sacked several times by attacking armies in the course of history.

After Asse was still strongly oriented towards agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century, industrialization began after 1945 . In 1961 Asse had 108 companies with a total of 3710 employees; In 1970 there were already 1,068 companies with a total of 5,487 employees.

As a result of the Belgian municipal reform in 1976, Asse was merged with the neighboring towns of Bekkerzeel, Kobbegem, Mollem, Relegem and Zellik to form the municipality of Asse.

In the last few years the proportion of allochtons has increased significantly, so that today 90% of school children no longer speak Dutch at home. The municipality tries to counteract this by offering language courses and an image campaign for Dutch. Course participants are encouraged to wear brooches so that their interlocutors do not switch to other languages, especially French or English, out of misunderstanding of consideration.
