The Athlon 64 FX is a microprocessor from AMD . As a member of the K8 generation it is thanks AMD64 compatible with the x86 - instruction set and at the same 64-bit capable. Newer versions with two processor cores ( dual core processor ) belong to the K9 generation .

Sense of the Athlon 64 FX

AMD has introduced a new marketing concept for the Athlon 64 FX: Since the clock rate is only of limited informative value about the performance of a processor, the Athlon 64 FX does not have any clock information in the name and all such processors are simply called Athlon 64 FX. The customer should be sure to always buy the fastest Athlon 64 when buying a new Athlon 64 FX. The moment AMD brings a faster Athlon 64 FX, its predecessor disappears from the market. Since this only applies to new goods and otherwise chaos would occur on the used market, there is still a model name that has nothing to do with any clock speeds: The first model is called the Athlon 64 FX-51 (2.2 GHz), the next FX-53 (2.4 GHz) etc. The model name has no specific reference and is only intended to describe the performance within the model series.

The Athlon 64 FX is primarily intended for home users with increased computing power requirements, for example for 3D computer games or video editing . The FX has a unique selling point compared to the other Athlon 64 processors. At its time, the FX-51 was the only Athlon 64 to have dual-channel RAM (as it was a disguised Opteron), the FX-53 for socket 940 was the same, while the FX-53 for socket 939 was the only Athlon 64 with one Dual-channel memory controller and 1 MB L2 cache (the first “normal” dual-channel Athlon 64 CPUs for socket 939 only had 512 kB). The FX-55 model is identical to the Athlon 64 X2 for the first time (the Athlon 64 4000+ is just a renamed Athlon 64 FX-53 and therefore also has 1 MB L2 cache and a clock frequency of 2.4 GHz). The Socket 940 variants FX-51 and FX-53 were identical to the AMD Opterons of the 100 series except for the RAM clock and the package and were dependent on the Socket 940 motherboard , with the 200 MHz not yet specified at the time DDR registered RAM . The FX-53 gave up for Socket 939, making the need for costly server - and workstation - hardware allowed. From the FX-55 these processors were only available for the socket 939, from the FX-62 only for the socket AM2 .

A special feature of the Athlon 64 FX is the free definition of the multiplier. In contrast to the normal Athlon 64, this can be changed freely. This allows the processor to be overclocked without increasing the reference clock.

Quad FX

With the introduction of the AMD Quad FX platform on December 30, 2006, three new models of the Athlon 64 FX became necessary. As before, these processors are based on the Windsor core, but are now suitable for dual processors and are therefore only available for socket F of the AMD Opteron . Therefore, in contrast to before, there is also more than one Athlon FX model on the market at the same time, as the FX-70 series with three models was introduced especially for this platform. Together with the "normal" model for single CPU systems, four models are available at the same time.
