The Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet is a permanent motorsport circuit in Brazil that was first used in 1974.
Origin and location
The line, opened in 1974 , is located in the west of the Brazilian capital Brasília . As a tribute to the then Brazilian President Emílio Garrastazu Médici , it was initially called Autódromo Emílio Medici . After Medici lost the presidency in the spring of 1974, the course was renamed the Autódromo de Brasília .
The route is 5.476 km long and includes twelve curves; six on the left and six on the right. In addition to the long version, there is also a layout that is similar to an oval . Before the facility was built, races had taken place on closed public roads in Brasília in 1962 and from 1966 to 1970 inclusive.
From 1995 to 2006 the now renamed route was leased by NZ Empreendimentos - a company under the control of Nelson Piquet - before it came back under the control of the Federal District do Brasil . Next to the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet is the Estádio Nacional de Brasília Mané Garrincha (formerly Estádio Mané Garrincha ), which is one of the stadiums of the 2014 World Cup . Together with the Nilson Nelson High School they form the Ayrton Senna Multisport Complex.
history
In February 1974, the Grande Prêmio Presidente Medici took place on the Autódromo , a Formula 1 race that was not part of the world championship . The winner was Emerson Fittipaldi in a McLaren . Until 1996 this remained the only international event of significance. That year, the BPR Global GT Series hosted a non-championship two-hour Gran Turismo Sports Car Show, won by Nelson Piquet and Johnny Cecotto .
The Brazilian racing series Stock Car Brasil and Fórmula Truck also regularly appear in Brasília, as do national motorcycle and kart championships.
In the 2014 season , the course should be on the calendar of the motorcycle world championship for the first time and host the Brazilian Grand Prix . In order for the line to be classified as suitable by the FIM , extensive reconstruction measures had to be carried out. Due to delays in the reconstruction of the route, a round of the motorcycle world championship in Brasília will be held in 2015 at the earliest.
Remarkable
In video games , the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet has long been a rarity. TOCA World Touring Cars for the PlayStation from 2000 was one of the first games in which the track could be driven virtually.
