Sonnborn was a former independent mayor's office that was divided and dissolved in 1888. The core of Sonnborn was incorporated into Elberfeld and today forms the residential district of Sonnborn of the Wuppertal district of Elberfeld-West , the western part of the mayor's office became independent as the municipality and mayor's office of Vohwinkel and today forms the majority of the Wuppertal district of the same name.

etymology

The etymological origin of the old place name Sonnborn appears for the first time in 874 with the mention of a " basilica, quae est in Sunnebrunno" (Sunnebrunno = sun well). This name can be deduced from a pagan cult site , in the place of which a Christian church ( basilica ) was built.

history

Sonnborn was possibly a Frankish outpost in the border area between the Franconian Empire and the area of influence of the Saxons . The only indication of this early period is the Vorläuferbau the Sonnborner main church, the Remigius - patronage that in the Merovingian - and Carolingian period was very popular. The frequently mentioned document from the year 874, which attests to the oldest church in Wuppertal, was exposed as a forgery. More recently, Sonnborn has been considered Elberfeld's western outpost for centuries .

The courts were initially subject to the court jurisdiction of the Lüntenbeck property belonging to the Gerresheim monastery . Later jurisdiction was assigned to Messrs. Elverfeld . In 1359 they were subordinated to the Office of Solingen and remained there until 1808. Under the following French rule, Sonnborn was assigned to the canton of Elberfeld . In the course of the Prussian reorganization of the districts after the withdrawal of the French, Sonnborn was awarded to the district of Mettmann and the mayor's office of Haan in 1816 . Repeated applications to be reassigned to Elberfeld were not considered.

The paved road from Elberfeld to Sonnborn was built on the initiative of Johann Wilhelm Fischer 1809–1812.

Mayor's office of Sonnborn

In 1867, Sonnborn was separated from Haan and made an independent mayor's office. Emil Pahlke (1828–1893) became the first mayor in 1868 , he remained in office until 1871 and was replaced by Gottfried Eschmann (1834–1890), who was succeeded by Gottlieb Heinrich (1856–1927) in 1886 .

Buildings

Hauptkirche Sonnborn

The early medieval "basilica" existed until the middle of the 15th century, when it was replaced by a new one. This in turn was enlarged from 1836 to 1838 and fell victim to a fire in 1917. From 1922 to 1926 the large Sonnborn main church was built on Sonnborner Strasse . The church organ from the Faust organ workshop is particularly important . The two bells from the 15th century are the oldest in the Wuppertal area.
