The Comarca Bages is located in the province of Barcelona in the autonomous community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of ​​1,093 km² and 178,885 inhabitants (2019).

location

The association of municipalities is located in the center of Catalonia. It borders in the north on the Comarca Berguedà , in the east on Osona , in the south on Vallès Oriental , Vallès Occidental and Baix Llobregat , in the south-west on Anoia and in the west on Solsonès . Together with the comarcas Anoia, Berguedà, Osona, Solsonès, the region forms the territory of Comarques Central .

Bages lies in the eastern part of the central Catalan depression. The river Llobregat and its tributary Cardener flow through the comarca from north to south. In the middle of the region runs from northeast to southwest the Pla de Bages (Bages plain), which is bordered on both sides by ridges and plateaus. The monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, founded around 950, was of great importance here in the Middle Ages . The north borders the Natural Park of Serra de Sant Llorenc del Munt i l'Obac , the massif is in the extreme south of Montserrat with the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat of Benedictines .

economy

An important industry has settled especially around the capital Manresa. Chemical, metalworking and food processing factories are located there. The textile industry is located on the banks of the Río Llobregat, while potash mines are located on the banks of the Cardener . In agriculture, wheat , barley and animal feed are mainly grown; Viticulture is also important (→ Pla de Bages ).
