The director was Fisher Stevens , who won an Oscar in 2010 for the production of the documentary The Bay . Mark Monroe wrote the script .

Leonardo DiCaprio , who was appointed United Nations Ambassador for Peace for Climate Protection by Ban Ki-moon on September 16, 2014 and who gave his first speech at the climate summit a few days later , speaks in the film with politicians, scientists, entrepreneurs and other people for whom the topic of climate protection is just as important as it is to himself. After taking office in 2013 , Pope Francis announced an environmental cyclical that was announced in 2015 and focuses on the topic of environmental and climate protection. Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, had pushed the Paris Agreement on global climate protection. At the UN climate conference, his foreign minister, John Kerry , recognized the responsibility of industrialized countries for climate change, especially that of the USA. Obama's former colleague, former US President Bill Clinton, had signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1998 , but the climate skeptic George W. Bush withdrew the signature. The British post-rock band Mogwai , who most recently wrote the soundtrack for Mark Cousins' documentary Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise , was also involved, as was the Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla , who is considered a pioneer of rock en Español, a musical genre where rock and Latin American rhythms merge and who was voted one of the 25 Most Influential Latin Americans in America by Time Magazine in 2005. In 2006 Santaolalla won the Oscar for best film composer for the country-oriented film music he created for Brokeback Mountain by Ang Lee and in 2007 for the film music for Babel by Alejandro González Iñárritu .

In a first step, the artists worked independently of one another and were guided by their feelings and instincts. In the next step, they exchanged the unfinished titles created in this way for revision, had them expanded, reprocessed and reinterpreted if they considered it necessary or useful. The soundtrack for Before the Flood , which was created in this joint project, comprises 18 songs and was released on October 21, 2016. Reznor released the song A Minute to Breathe on October 7, 2016 . According to his own statements, Reznor sang the song in a voice that he had never sung before. In December 2016, the song was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Song , from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations.

The film won over 73 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of 30 critics in total).

Adam Chitwood from Collider says the film is similar to a study and shows what is happening in the world we live in, what could happen to it in the future and what can be done to prevent the worst possible outcome. Chitwood highlights the high profile interviews and compares the film to An Inconvenient Truth . The film already refers to the worst consequences of climate change and the associated global warming in the title, which alludes to the Flood. As Before the Flood or Antediluvian the period of human history is called before the flood in the English language in the Christian and Jewish theology, that means the antediluvian time. In addition to the biblical references, John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter also recalls the description of the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch used at the beginning of the film , which he also finds in Mark Monroe's script, which uses this as a framework for the presentation of the reckless use of human resources.
