Preparation for the season
Personnel changes
The defensively versatile Argentine Leonardo Balerdi , who had only eight appearances for the first team in the previous season, was awarded to runner-up Olympique Marseille to gain further match practice in the French Ligue 1 . Dženis Burnić , former junior national player and most recently on the ball for BVB in spring 2017, was handed over to the second division club 1. FC Heidenheim after several loan positions . Mario Götze , who had had a difficult time with the team at least since the signing of head coach Favre , did not extend his expiring contract and was now available for a free transfer. One of the decisive factors in the past two years had been Achraf Hakimi , who first played defensively and then offensively on the flanks and was involved in many goals; With his home club Real Madrid no agreement could be reached for a firm commitment and the player finally moved to Inter Milan . The 2014 world champion, André Schürrle , never really arrived in Dortmund and finally ended his active career after returning from his second loan. In addition, substitute goalkeeper Eric Oelschlägel and defender Ömer Toprak , who remained in Bremen after relegation , left the club.
The Belgian World Cup third from 2018, Thomas Meunier , from Paris , the 17-year-old Jude Bellingham , who can be used variably in midfield, also joined BVB to strengthen the defensive wing . Bellingham had previously played in the second-rate English championship and took a similar path as his compatriot Jadon Sancho . With the " Zehner " Reinier , an 18-year-old from Real Madrid's youth followed Hakimi; as with this one, a two-year loan deal was agreed. In addition, loan players Marius Wolf and Felix Passlack returned to the team.

Two more friendlies followed at the end of the month, the opponents were the second division clubs SC Paderborn 07 and VfL Bochum . The MSV was defeated, while defeats against Feyenoord and Bochum and a draw against Paderborn followed.
