In addition, left Gonzalo Castro ( VfB Stuttgart ), Erik Durm ( Huddersfield Town ), Felix Passlack (loan to Norwich City ) and Dominik Reimann ( Holstein Kiel ) the team.
With the former Augsburger Marwin Hitz , the Swiss goalkeeper Roman Bürki was given a compatriot and competitor who narrowly lost the duel for the number 1 in preparation. The 22-year-old Eric Oelschlägel came as a former goalkeeper of the SV Werder second team , which was relegated to the Regionalliga Nord , for the position of the third goalkeeper and was used in the second guard in the Regionalliga West . In defense, the services of the 19-year-old Moroccan Achraf Hakimi , who was trained by Real Madrid in his youth , and the ex- Mainz player Abdou Diallo were secured for two years on loan . The center was strengthened by national players Thomas Delaney ( Denmark ) and Axel Witsel ( third place in Belgium ), who was convincing at the 2018 World Cup , both in the “ six ” position at home. For the attack came Marius Wolf from Frankfurt and with the Spanish international Paco Alcácer a classic center forward on loan from FC Barcelona . The deal with Barcelona also included an option to buy after the loan deal ended. In addition, Jacob Bruun Larsen's and Dženis Burnić's loan contracts with VfB Stuttgart ended.
Furthermore, ex-player Sebastian Kehl took over the newly created position of head of the licensed players department on June 1, 2018.
Test matches and training camps
The first game under coach Favre was a test match on July 13, 2018 against Wiener Austria (1-0), in which young players such as Amos Pieper, Dominik Wanner and Julian Schwermann were allowed to take part in addition to some newcomers. The team then traveled to the USA again from July 18 to 26 and took part in the 2018 International Champions Cup with 17 other top European clubs as part of a PR tour . In Chicago , Charlotte and Pittsburgh they met Manchester City (1-0), Liverpool FC (3-1) and Benfica Lisbon (5-6 on penalties).
Between August 1 and 7, 2018, Borussia Dortmund then completed a training camp in the spa town of Bad Ragaz in Switzerland. In addition to five public training units, a test match each against Stade Rennes ( Altach , Austria, 1: 1) and SSC Napoli ( St. Gallen , 1: 3) were completed. With a 1-0 win against Lazio Rome on August 12, the club's test phase ended a good two weeks before the start of the Bundesliga season.
Season 2018/19 - Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League
First round
Borussia Dortmund started the season with Marco Reus , who had only extended his contract to 2023 in March 2018, as the new captain. Łukasz Piszczek and Manuel Akanji were appointed as its representatives . At the start of the season, Piszczek was the oldest at the age of 33, while Sergio Gómez (17) was the youngest player listed in the professional squad.
The competitive season began on August 20, 2018 with the game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the first main round of the DFB Cup . In extra time, the team prevailed 2-1 against the second division, which was technically better over long distances, after the decisive winning goal from Marco Reus in the 121st minute. The first league opponent was RB Leipzig on August 26th and was clearly defeated 4-1 in front of 80,000 spectators in the Westfalenstadion at home . The players Diallo, Witsel, Delaney and Wolf celebrated their Bundesliga debuts for BVB, Hitz and Hakimi were on the bench without substitution. At the same time, the first league lead of the new season was recorded. On the second day of the match there was a goalless draw against Hannover 96 , which resulted in the loss of the top position that FC Bayern Munich took over. In the first international break, the third division VfL Osnabrück had to admit defeat to the Dortmunders who stayed at home 6-0. This was followed by a 3-1 win against Frankfurt on matchday 3, in which Paco Alcácer came onto the field for the first time after a substitution in the 67th minute for Maximilian Philipp in a competitive game for the Black and Yellows and scored after 21 minutes .
The debut in the premier class on September 18 came with a 1-0 win over group opponents Bruges . Jan-Pascal Reckert and Amos Pieper from the second team and Luca Unbehaun ( U19 ) were nominated for the B list of the Champions League squad . On the 5th matchday of the league, the team of coach Favre then won 7-0 at home against the newly promoted 1. FC Nürnberg , which marked the highest victory of the current season to date. The defenders Hakimi and Diallo scored their first competitive goals for BVB. After Bayern played 1: 1 against FC Augsburg in parallel and lost 2-0 in Berlin on matchday 6 , they regained the top of the table after beating Bayer 04 Leverkusen 4-2 .
On October 3, the well in which it was domestic league ailing AS Monaco 3: 0 defeat, which made for the lead in the Champions League Group A. In the 4: 3 over FC Augsburg on the 7th Bundesliga matchday, Paco Alcácer came on as a substitute in the 59th minute and scored a total of three goals in half an hour, including the decisive 4: 3 with a free kick, which only occurred in the sixth minute stoppage time fell. In addition, keeper Bürki stood between the posts for Borussia in the Bundesliga for the hundredth time. Also in the second international break a friendly win followed, regional league Alemannia Aachen lost 4-0 against Borussia. This was followed by two 4-0 successes against VfB Stuttgart and Atlético Madrid and a 3-2 after extra time in the DFB Cup against another second division club, Union Berlin .
At the beginning of November 2018, after 15 competitive competitive games without a defeat, the team was as good as it had been in a long time. In addition, no BVB coach had succeeded in doing this before. However, it was 0-2 on November 6th in Madrid at Atlético and thus the first competitive defeat was determined.
The duel with the big rivals FC Bayern on the 11th matchday of the Bundesliga was won 3-2 after two goals from captain Reus and the again striking Joker Alcácer. The Munich team had previously taken the lead through hits from Robert Lewandowski . Marwin Hitz was the first time for Dortmund in the Bundesliga for the ailing Bürki on the field. The gap in the table on FC Bayern increased to seven points and Mönchengladbach, in second place, still had four points less.
On November 23, BVB prematurely withdrew its purchase option agreed with FC Barcelona and provided Paco Alcácer with a contract that runs until 2023. In the following league game against Mainz 05, the Alcácer set two more Bundesliga records with his 2-1 winning goal. Both with his eighth "Joker goal" and with his ninth league goal after just 237 minutes of action. The previous record holder Gert “Charly” Dörfel had set this record with nine goals after 565 minutes in the premier season of the Bundesliga . Furthermore, no BVB team have scored more than eleven unbeaten Bundesliga games and no team since the league was founded with goals from 15 different players in twelve games.
Even before the penultimate group game - on November 28th against Bruges - it was certain that they would make it to the round of 16 of the Champions League. In the 0-0 win against the Belgians, Łukasz Piszczek overtook the previous Dortmund record holder Stefan Reuter (44 appearances) with his 45th appearance.
The 177th Revierderby on December 8, 2018 was a success with a 2-1 win through goals from Delaney and Sancho, the first victory in the traditional duel with FC Schalke 04 in three years. Another double by Portuguese Raphaël Guerreiro in the 2-0 win in Monaco secured the Champions League group victory a little later after Atlético's goalless draw in Bruges. It was already the 22nd competitive game of the season and at the same time the first in which the players Witsel, Reus and Sancho, who were the only ones who had played all 21 games to date, were spared.
On matchday 15, when Werder Bremen were defeated 2-1 at home, the team won the autumn championship early on. Long-time Dortmund player Şahin, who moved to the Weser in the summer , was bid farewell during the game. The first defeat in the Bundesliga came a game later, 2-0 in Düsseldorf. Until then, BVB was one of only four teams from the five European "top leagues" ( Liverpool FC , Juventus Turin , Paris Saint-Germain ) that had not been defeated after 15 league games. Against the Rhinelander, who were temporarily 2-0 in the lead thanks to a goal from Jean Zimmer , the team was unusually unimaginative and not hungry enough. Paco Alcácer scored his tenth joker goal and thus set another Bundesliga record.
The home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach on December 21, 2018 (2: 1) was played by BVB with special jerseys. The sponsor's logo was replaced by the words “Thank you, Kumpel” as a tribute to the end of coal mining in Germany after the closure of the last Prosper-Haniel mine in Bottrop .
Second half
During the winter break, Sebastian Rode , who had only played twice for the second team in the Regionalliga after a long injury break, left the club on loan; he joined Eintracht Frankfurt again. At the beginning of January, Chelsea also acquired the transfer rights to Christian Pulisic , who had only been a substitute player in the first half of the season and remained on loan in the Dortmund squad for the second half. With a transfer fee of 64 million euros, Pulisic was behind Ousmane Dembélé , who moved to FC Barcelona in August 2017 for 105 million euros , to the club's second-most expensive departure and one of the most expensive transfers in the history of the Bundesliga.
The winter training camp of BVB took place from January 4th to 12th, 2019 in Marbella , Andalusia , the test match opponents were fellow Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf on January 7th and the Dutch first division clubs Willem II Tilburg and Feyenoord Rotterdam on January 11th. Also there were the young players Julian Schwermann, Tobias Raschl and Amos Pieper , the latter was already in the first half of the professional matchday squad. As a consequence of the repeated failure of defender Manuel Akanji, the transfer of the Argentine U20 national player and central defender Leonardo Balerdi, originally planned for the summer, was carried out after returning from Spain . After the striker Alexander Isak had not been used in any competition in the current season, he was awarded to the Dutch Eredivisie in January , where he reinforced Willem II Tilburg until the end of the season. As the first player in the top Dutch league, Isak managed to score three goals from a penalty on March 30, 2019 in Tilburg's 3-2 home win against Fortuna Sittard .
On the 19th matchday, the visiting team from Hanover, which had been on a relegation zone for seven matchdays, was beaten 5-1. A day later, the Lower Saxony dismissed their head coach André Breitenreiter . A six-month loan deal for Shinji Kagawa with the Turkish first division club Beşiktaş Istanbul was agreed within the winter transfer period . The reason for this was only four of the Japanese’s possible 27 competitive appearances in the current season. On his debut, the Japanese scored two goals in a 6-2 away win against Antalyaspor to make the final score 2-6. When four of the five best scorers in the league to date (Reus, Sancho, Haller , Jović ) came together, BVB and Frankfurt parted 1: 1.
The illness-related failure of the goalkeepers Bürki and Hitz marked the competitive debut of von Oelschlägel in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup against Werder Bremen. Bremen were able to prevail on penalties. Due to two draws, including a 3: 3 after a 3-0 lead against Hoffenheim, as well as a defeat, the meanwhile nine points advantage over Bayern Munich was gone, only the better goal difference kept the table lead. After two defeats in the round of 16 against Tottenham Hotspur , they were eliminated from the Champions League.
A win on matchday 25 against VfB Stuttgart (3-1) did not mean a point loss to Bayern, but BVB fell back to second place for the first time since matchday 6 due to the poorer goal difference. On matchday 27 Achraf Hakimi suffered a broken metatarsus in the 2-0 home win against VfL Wolfsburg and was out for the rest of the season. After regaining the lead in the standings, they visited their direct rivals Bayern Munich on matchday 28; a 0: 5 meant the highest defeat of the season so far.
The 178th Revierderby, which was also Julian Weigl's 100th Bundesliga game in the BVB jersey, was lost. After taking the lead with a header from Götze, referee Zwayer gave a hand penalty against Julian Weigl, which equalized Schalke 04. In the 28th minute, Salif Sané headed a corner to take the lead. While the Gelsenkirchener saw six yellows, after an hour only Reus (first expulsion of the professional career) and finally Marius Wolf after rough fouls from the field. Nine of them managed to get the next goal after the 3: 1 achieved in the meantime, but Breel Embolo brought the decision in the 86th minute with the 4: 2.
With a 3-2 win over Düsseldorf on the penultimate matchday, the championship decision was postponed to the season finale due to a goalless draw by Bayern in Leipzig. Keeper Hitz came to his second Bundesliga appearance for Dortmund, while Christian Pulisic was officially bid farewell in the last home game of the season. Ex-captain Marcel Schmelzer was back on the field for the first time since January; it was his 250th Bundesliga game, all of which he played for BVB.
Despite a 2-0 success in Mönchengladbach, the title could not be won by a 5-1 defending champion from Munich, the team was runner-up two points behind. As the only player, Sancho, who gave the most assists in the league, was in all 34 games on the field.
