Borussia Dortmund / Season 2019/20

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The article deals with the course of the 2019/20 season of the German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund .

Preparation for the season

Personnel changes

After winning the runner-up and returning to the group stage of the Champions League , BVB attacked the biggest weak point of the previous season, the defensive. Defender Abdou Diallo was sold to Paris Saint-Germain after just one season and Ömer Toprak was loaned out to league rival Bremen , who also has a purchase option. National player Nico Schulz ( TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ) was signed as a substitute and Mats Hummels returned to Dortmund after three seasons with FC Bayern .

While Sebastian Rode stayed in Frankfurt and Christian Pulisic's already established transfer to Chelsea was completed, long-time employee Shinji Kagawa also left for Spain. With the national players Julian Brandt (from Leverkusen ) and the Belgian World Cup third party Thorgan Hazard , adequate successors were found in the midfield. Maximilian Philipp , who had hardly been deployed in the previous year, found a new employer in Russia , as did André Schürrle , who was again awarded .

With the Spaniard Mateu Morey, the club secured a young talent from the A-youth of FC Barcelona . The reigning youth champions Luca Unbehaun (fourth goalkeeper) and Tobias Raschl (midfield) were appointed to the first team, but Unbehaun was also eligible to play for the U19s.

Test matches and training camps

After the start of training on July 3, 2019, the team started the test game phase with a 10-0 win at the Baden-Württemberg regional division FC Schweinberg. Afterwards, the FC's sixty-year celebration took place on the club's premises. As part of the week-long trip to the USA , further games were played against the local MLS franchise Seattle Sounders (3: 1) and against the reigning Champions League winners Liverpool FC (3: 2). Dortmund also paid a visit to the Swiss community of Bad Ragaz as part of a training camp and competed against Udinese Calcio and FC St. Gallen (both 4: 1). In addition, FC Zurich was defeated 6-0.

Season 2019/20 - Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, DFL Supercup and UEFA Champions League

First round

At the beginning of August, the game for the DFL Supercup against the reigning champions Bayern Munich was on. With goals from Paco Alcácer and Jadon Sancho , Borussia won their first title of the season after a 2-0 win, and for some players it was the first title ever with the club. The winning streak also lasted in the first round of the cup , where they met third division club KFC Uerdingen 05 and an old friend, Kevin Großkreutz . One day later they met with another third division team, Preußen Münster , for a friendly game, which the Münster team lost 4-0. In July Marco Reus was voted Germany's Footballer of the Year for the second time since 2012 .

BVB opened the Bundesliga season at their home stadium in Westphalia and hosted FC Augsburg , which brought back memories of the 4: 3 conceivable last season. After a little more than 30 seconds, the guests took the lead, but Paco Alcácer was able to equalize in the third minute of the game. While Marwin Hitz continued to represent his injured compatriot Roman Bürki , Nico Schulz, Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt, who made it 5-1, made their Bundesliga debuts in black and yellow and Hummels was also in the starting line-up.

The team also fell behind early on against 1. FC Köln and for a long time showed no ideas when it came to creating opportunities, but the Domstadt team held up well until the middle of the second half. Only when Julian Brandt came on, Borussia came closer and closer to the opposing penalty area as the Cologne team were weakening and were finally able to turn the game in their favor with three goals.

On the 3rd match day, the negative trend of early backlogs was followed. Newcomer to the Bundesliga 1. FC Union Berlin , for whom ex-Dortmund Neven Subotić played, was also able to take the lead against BVB. Against aggressively acting offensive players, Dortmund's defensive, which is particularly susceptible to set pieces, could again not live up to its reputation as a favorite, the otherwise dangerous offensive was unable to score points against a stable defense despite Brandt's starting line-up. Due to repeated mistakes by Hummels, Akanji and Bürki, Borussia Dortmund lost 3-1, giving the Berliners their first ever Bundesliga win.

During the first international break, a rump squad led by Marwin Hitz, Mario Götze and Marcel Schmelzer played a friendly match against the regional division Energie Cottbus . Eight young players were also involved in the 5-0 win, four of whom were each able to score a goal.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen visited the Westfalenstadion after the break. Against the team of ex-Dortmund coach Peter Bosz succeeded a sovereign 4-0, the defeat against Union was overcome and the contact to the still unbeaten league leaders RB Leipzig was maintained.

This was followed by a goalless draw in the first Champions League game against a well-positioned FC Barcelona . In the first meeting in 22 years, captain Reus missed the chance of a home win from the penalty spot. Due to the inability of goalkeepers Hitz, Unbehaun and Oelschlägel, the substitute keeper of the regional league team, Jonas Hupe, was a backup for Roman Bürki for the first time in a competitive game in the professional team.

In Frankfurt , BVB did not manage to leave the field as the winner despite leading twice. The 2-2 for the opponent was made possible by the veteran Delaney , who deflected a ball from Kamada in the six-yard box.

In the home game against Bremen , where they failed in the cup last season, they fell behind again early on, but were quickly able to equalize through Mario Götze, who was in the starting XI for the first time this season. Reus' opening goal was equalized after an hour and it was not possible to defeat the opponent. Since the regular defenders Hummels and Zagadou were not in the squad, Julian Weigl played in central defense for the first time since the preseason.

After a lackluster 2-0 in Prague , in which Hakimi scored both goals, another tie followed in the league, this time a 2-2 in Freiburg . A remarkable volley by Axel Witsel brought BVB into the lead, after the SC equalized Hakimi was able to net again, but the lead was lost again. While striker Alcácer was not even in the squad, Marcel Schmelzer was able to play his first competitive game since the last matchday of the preseason after being substituted on.

After the last three draws in the Bundesliga, there was finally another victory in the top game against table leaders Borussia Mönchengladbach . At 1-0, which was not won higher due to two close offside decisions, Sancho was not in the squad due to a late return from the English national team after a decision by head coach Lucien Favre . While clearing an opposing corner, Roman Bürki injured his foot and had to be exchanged for his compatriot Hitz.

Against Inter Milan , however, the goalkeeper was able to play again, but Reus and Alcácer were missing. Despite this and although he had only played six of 13 possible competitive games so far, Götze, who had already been used in the storm center more often in the previous season, was again not on the field. While the Italians were able to take the lead after just 22 minutes with a goal from Lautaro Martínez after Nico Schulz had lifted the offside, they increased to 2-0 in the 89th minute. They could have hit a penalty a good seven minutes earlier, but Bürki saved it. Following one of the weakest games of the season, the negative voices of coach Favre increased with regard to his line-ups, his passive nature and the increasingly discouraged appearance of the team in the media and in the environment.

The tough 179th Revierderby ended with 0-0 in line with performance; In contrast to the last derby, there was no dismissal. The second clash against Mönchengladbach within a few days, this time in the cup, was also won. On Lucien Favre's 62nd birthday, defender Piszczek played his 300th Bundesliga game in a 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg, which was the only Bundesliga team to date .

The second leg against Inter Milan in the home stadium did not start well, after mistakes by Akanji and Hummels it was 0: 1 early, at break even 0: 2. In the second half, BVB showed morale and was able to turn the game around with two goals from the best goalscorer Achraf Hakimi and one from Julian Brandt and keep the chances for the final round.

In the second clash of the season with FC Bayern, this time in the Bundesliga, the team around ex-Munich and substitute captain Mats Hummels delivered a disastrous performance. BVB had only one chance to score in the entire first half and let their rivals act without great distress. It was only through luck and some good actions by goalkeeper Bürki that Bayern landed no more goals at 0: 4. The last goal was scored by Bayern returnee Hummels when he tried to clear a ball from Thiago .

After the international break with SC Paderborn 07, the team competed against a supposed opponent to overcome the 0: 4 in Munich. The newcomer and bottom of the table led the reigning runner-up over long stretches and was able to take a 3-0 lead halfway through the Westfalenstadion. Favre once again demonstrated his confusing line-up system when he made all three changes at halftime, but in fairness words were not enough to turn around. From the start of the second half, the team looked like they had been changed and made up for what had been missed in the first 45 minutes. Paderborn was pressed early on in their own half and the chances increased. After Sancho and Witsel were able to reduce to 2: 3 and the Ostwestfalen could only book one more big chance, captain Reus managed to score the important goal again and again in the second minute of stoppage time. Before the game in Barcelona, Watzke and Zorc publicly expressed their trust in the head coach.

After a 1: 3 in Barcelona a 2: 1 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium followed . Despite a dismissal for Hummels, the remaining Borussia were able to defend against Hertha and loan player Marius Wolf the 2-1 they had already achieved before the break.

Fortuna Dusseldorf was defeated 5-0 on matchday 14 at the Westfalenstadion, with Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Julian Brandt proving to be key players time and again. In the following week, a victory in the premier class was a must . A 2-1 win over Slavia Prague, which BVB had to manage in the last quarter of an hour after Julian Weigl was sent off and which, above all, keeper Bürki secured with strong saves, made it into the final round. However, group opponents Barcelona also helped here, who also defeated Inter 2-1 with a B-Elf competitor and shot into the Europa League . In both games, Leonardo Balerdi made his first competitive appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

Despite two potential penalty kicks not verified by video evidence, Mainz 05 conceded four goals, with defender Nico Schulz first scoring for Dortmund in the Bundesliga. It was the fourth win in a row. Then the series broke again when Borussia dropped a total of five points within the English week at the end of the year. First they broke in after a 2-0 lead against league leaders RB Leipzig in the second half and played 3: 3, then they were unable to expand a close 1-0 in Hoffenheim and lost 2-1 at the end of the year .

Second half

At the beginning of January 2020, the team set off again for the winter training camp in Marbella . There were test matches against Standard Liège and Feyenoord Rotterdam as well as Bundesliga competitor 1. FSV Mainz 05. The A-Juniors Immanuël Pherai, Ramzi Ferjani, Alaa Bakir and Giovanni Reyna were allowed to travel as well as Chris Führich , Steffen Tigges and Joseph Boyamba from the regional league team . Even before the start of the trip, Erling Haaland , Austria's footballer of the year 2019 , was announced the signing of another urgently needed striker; the Norwegian joined Borussia until 2024. In contrast, Julian Weigel, who was used in midfield and at times also in defense, left BVB after four and a half years and 171 competitive games in the direction of Portugal to Benfica Lisbon . While the game against Liège ended goalless, they won 4-2 against Feyenoord and had to accept a 0-2 against Mainz on Haaland's debut.

At the start of the second half of the season, Dortmund converted an interim 1: 3 into a 5: 3. Erling Haaland, who scored three goals within 20 minutes and was only the seventh Bundesliga player to do so on his debut, played a major role in this. Giovanni Reyna, who was now an integral part of the professional squad in addition to his involvement in the A-Juniors Bundesliga , made his debut in the top German division. This was followed by a clear 5: 1 at home against Cologne. The opponent was dominated for long stretches of the game, the defense was safe and “defensive boss” Hummels was able to shine with two crosses from his own half, each of which led to hits. Haaland, who came back on the field after an hour, scored twice.

At the end of the winter transfer window, both Paco Alcácer ( FC Villarreal ) and Jacob Bruun Larsen ( TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ) left the club. Bruun Larsen had never been able to recommend himself for a regular place, while the Spaniard had expressed the wish to return to his homeland and feared that Erling Haaland would not get enough playing time in the run-up to the European Championship , which was initially planned for 2020 . For this, the German national and midfielder Emre Can was signed on loan from Juventus Turin .

A 5-0 win against Union Berlin let BVB draw level with FC Bayern, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Hannover 96 , which were the only teams to date to have scored five goals in three consecutive Bundesliga games. In addition, Erling Haaland got his season number 6 and 7; he became the first Bundesliga player to score five in his first two games and seven in his first three games.

As in the previous year, Werder Bremen ensured Dortmund's round of 16 in the DFB Cup; Reyna was able to record his first competitive game goal for the first team. In the BayArena , BVB again showed glaring defensive weaknesses and lost 3: 4 to Bayer Leverkusen despite a 2-1 lead in the meantime. Curiously, three Dortmund defensive players had scored the goals, while Erling Haaland was goalless in the first competitive game. In addition, Marco Reus was out for a long time before the game due to a muscle injury. This was followed by a clear 4-0 at home against the Europa League final round participant Frankfurt, from which Piszczek, who was to play the entire second half of the season in central defense, took over the captain's armband from the injured Reus.

Before the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in the second round of the premier class , the premature fixed commitment Emre Cans was announced; the defensive player received a contract valid until June 2024. The game was won 2-1, both goals scored Erling Haaland, after the Frankfurt game for Manuel Akanji Dan-Axel Zagadou moved into central defense alongside Mats Hummels. BVB had their opponents under control and only allowed a few chances, created a few good opportunities themselves and showed themselves to be defensively safe.

Both in the successful league evanche against Werder Bremen and in the 1-0 win over Freiburg, Reus was missing as in the two previous games due to a muscle injury. In addition, head coach Favre continued to trust the French Zagadou, who was able to conquer Akanji's regular place. In the subsequent Borussia duel, in which the former Thorgan Hazard from Gladbach scored the 0: 1, the foals were defeated 2: 1. It was the eleventh competitive game win in a row against rivals from the Rhine .

In the last game before the forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the second leg in Paris was lost 2-0, which again meant the knockout in the Champions League. The 180th Revierderby, which was contested on May 16 after a two-month break, was won 4-0, Raphaël Guerreiro scored two goals. From the Paris game onwards, games had to be continued in the form of ghost games without spectators. In the game of the 27th matchday against Wolfsburg, Guerreiro and Hakimi once again proved their scoring threat, for the Portuguese it was already the eighth goal of the current Bundesliga season. In advance, sports director Zorc had communicated that he had not reached an agreement with Mario Götze, which means that the player will leave Dortmund free of charge after the season.

A 0: 1 against FC Bayern, which gave them an advantage in the championship fight, was followed by a 6: 1 in Paderborn. Jadon Sancho was able to achieve his first hat trick as a professional and the young Spaniard Mateu Morey made his debut in the top German division shortly before the end. In the subsequent 1-0 home win against Hertha BSC, U23 player Marco Rente and Dutch A-Junior Immanuël Pherai were in the Bundesliga for the first time. With another 1-0, this time against the relegation-threatened Fortuna from Düsseldorf, a goal of the season was already met on matchday 31, when qualification for the Champions League group stage could be achieved. While Łukasz Piszczek, who had extended his expiring contract until June 2021, played his 250th Bundesliga game for BVB against Düsseldorf, Marco Reus was able to return to training after a four-month break due to a muscle injury.

In a tough duel with the relegation-threatened Mainz team, in which there were nine yellow cards, Dortmund, for which it was no longer about anything due to the already established championship of FC Bayern, played with the second half of the season. In addition to the newly nominated pension, the squad also included his teammate and midfielder Taylan Duman and the captain of the A-Juniors, Alaa Bakir. With a header and a penalty, the Rheinhessen won 2-0 in the Westfalenstadion and were able to take an immense step towards relegation. One matchday before the end of the game, the team was runner-up again after the worst rival Leipzig was defeated 2-0. Dan-Axel Zagadou was able to return to the field for the first time since the "Corona restart", the young players Morey and Reyna were both in the starting line-up for the first time. Erling Haaland was able to rise to the second best Dortmund scorer behind Jadon Sancho with two more goals and thus beat Borussia’s Bundesliga record from the 2015/16 season , which was 82 goals. In advance, Keeper Bürki had extended his working paper until 2023.

The last home game was lost 4-0 at home against Hoffenheim, which reached the group stage of the Europa League. Mario Götze was in the stadium to say goodbye, but was not in the squad. Without the joy of playing from most of the season, the team allowed Andrej Kramaric to score four goals on the debut of midfielder Tobias Raschl and went into the summer break.
