The 1999 British Open was a snooker tournament of the 1998/99 season that was held in Plymouth from April 4th to 11th . As in the past 6 years, the Plymouth Pavilions were the venue for the tournament. Overall, it was the 15th edition of the tournament.
Defending champion John Higgins came back to the semifinals, where he narrowly lost to Fergal O'Brien . The Irishman then won the final against Anthony Hamilton 9: 7. It was the only professional title that O'Brien could win in his career.
As the tournament last took place in spring and was brought forward to autumn in the following season, there was a second edition of the British Open this calendar year.
Main tournament
After four qualifying rounds, in which the players from 33rd place in the world rankings had participated, 32 players were left. The top 32 were placed directly for the main tournament, the 32 qualifiers were drawn for the first round.
