history

The time until 1945

The Viennese academic fraternity Olympia was previously taken place under impression of two days on November 10, 1859 Schiller - torchlight procession of 24 students of both Viennese universities founded and was called as from 27 January 1860 internally fraternity Olympia . On May 20, 1862, Olympia officially declared itself a fraternity, which was recognized by the authorities on May 6, 1868. Initially the colors purple-white-red were added and a purple hat was worn, later the colors were changed to black-red-gold . A large part of the members were supporters of the conservative principle , which was elevated to the federal principle on October 19, 1872. In November 1872 the first racket - length was fought. In the fraternity work, connections to the fraternities of the German Reich were sought, but due to their principle of independence, no cartels were entered into. From 1862 onwards, the Olympia took part in all associations of Austrian fraternities, including the Linz Deputy Convent on May 5, 1889.

In 1919 she joined the German Burschenschaft with the other fraternities of the Ostmark fraternity . At the First World War 85 Olympen participated, of which fell 9th In the spring of 1927 the Olympia moved into its own fraternity house . In the winter semester she had 118 old men , 40 active and inactive. After the corporations were dissolved, the Olympia was called Kameradschaft Johann Gottlieb Fichte from 1938 onwards .

The time after 1945

After the Second World War , the Olympia was re-established as a fraternity in the early 1950s, with the support and takeover of the members of a Libertas fraternity founded in 1941 , which was called Academic Round Table Laetitia in the post-war period . On May 29, 1952, Olympia was involved in the establishment of the General Deputy Convent in Austria (ADCÖ). She was also a founding member of the fraternity , which is now viewed by its critics as far to the right.

In 1961 the fraternity was officially dissolved because several Olympians, including NDP founder Norbert Burger , were involved in bomb attacks in South Tyrol and the Olympics in this context exceeded its statutory scope by obliging its members to make a donation for an Olympian who was arrested in Italy . After the members of the Olympia had continued their work in the Vienna academic fraternity Vandalia in the period after the dissolution , the Olympia was reconstituted in 1973, and most of the members of the Vandalia joined the new Vienna academic fraternity Olympia . In 1976, the Olympia bought the house of the postponed Vienna fraternity Alemannia . In 1983 Olympia resigned from the German Burschenschaft in Austria , in which it had taken over the chairmanship in the 1969/70 and 1980/81 financial years. She remained only in the German fraternity , in which she had entered in 1971 through Vandalia. In the business year 1989/90 Olympia was chairman of the German fraternity.

When the Olympics again took over the chairmanship of the umbrella association of the German fraternity on January 5th, 1996 , some connections from this resigned. (See also: New German Burschenschaft ) One of the reasons given for this step was that the Olympics had called for “Austria and parts of Poland to be included in the reunification of Germany”.

The Olympics described themselves in a leaflet in the 1990s as follows:

"We have remained normal under the rubble of time, re-education , grief and dismay, but also consumption, social conceit and modernity have passed us almost completely without a trace."

It also said there:

“Are you ugly, fat, sick or a stranger in the country, are you tormented by worry lines, Weltschmerz or left-wing liberalism, do you wear alternative or fancy clothes or even a little bit in your ear, do you study psychology , political science or theology or not at all you refuse to do military service or you have a friend with you who is neither beautiful nor quiet, in short: if you are abnormal or unhappy in any way, you better stay at home. "

In 2008, the FPÖ nominated Martin Graf as the third President of the National Council . He was criticized for his membership in the Olympia, but was elected with 109 out of 156 valid votes; the green opponent Alexander Van der Bellen received 27 votes. When asked about the leaflet quoted above, Graf said that the leaflet was a joke.

The Olympia is based in Vienna's 6th district, Mariahilf . In the financial years 1953/54, 1961/62, 1970/71, 1979/80 1991/92 she was chairwoman of the Wiener Korporationsring (WKR).

Links to right-wing extremism and neo-Nazism

The Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW), the social scientist Dietrich Heither and the majority of the German and Austrian media classify the fraternity as a right-wing extremist or very far-right organization. Martin Graf criticized the assessment of the DÖW and replied that the DÖW would see “any position that is not located on the left” as right-wing extremists.

In 1991 the delegation of the Olympia submitted a motion to the Burschentag in Eisenach , which said: “The infiltration of the German people by members of foreign peoples threatens the biological and cultural substance of the German people (...) The German people are through before their national body infiltrates To protect foreigners effectively. "

The Nazi Prohibition Act was criticized by Olympic members. In 2000, the Olympe Walter Asperl called on the then federal ministers with a fraternity background to do something against the prohibition law. Martin Graf also questioned the prohibition law in 2000.

In the recent past, the Olympics have repeatedly invited representatives of the right-wing extremist spectrum: as early as 1993 and June 2000 the singer-songwriter Frank Rennicke , in January 2003 the singer-songwriter Michael Müller , in November 2005 the Holocaust denier David Irving and in January 2008 the NPD - Functionary and songwriter Jörg Hähnel .

In the financial years 1971/72, 1982/83, 1985/86, 1986/87 and 2009/10, the Olympia held the chairmanship of the Burschenschaftliche Gemeinschaft , a German-nationally oriented association of German and Austrian fraternities.

In February 2010, the British-Canadian race theorist John Philippe Rushton , whose book Race, evolution, and behavior: A life history perspective from 1995, was published in 2005 under the title Race, Evolution and Behavior: A Theory of Development History in the Austrian Ares Verlag appeared, invited to a lecture by the Vienna Academic Fraternity Olympia. The lecture was on the topic of “Race, Evolution and Behavior”, was directed against a “left utopia of 'equality for all people'” and led to considerable media coverage and a parliamentary question in the Austrian Parliament.
