CTS Eventim (proper spelling in capital letters) is an international company with headquarters in Munich . The head office is in Bremen . Founded in 1989 under the name CTS Computer Ticket Service, the company developed into the market leader in the fields of ticketing and live entertainment after being taken over by Klaus-Peter Schulenberg . CTS Eventim shares have been traded on the stock exchange since 2000 . It is currently listed in the MDAX .

history

Foundation to IPO

In 1989 Marcel Avram and Matthias Hoffmann founded the company "CTS Computer Ticket Service". It was supposed to support the sale of tickets for concerts of the two nationally known organizers and was also open to third parties. Following the example of foreign systems, it solved the problem that interested parties did not receive tickets while they were available elsewhere. Regardless of the innovative business model , the company ran into difficulties and was taken over by Klaus-Peter Schulenberg in 1996. He was one of the first to invest in the growing business area and restructured CTS Computer Ticket Service. In 1998 he also acquired the GSO Gesellschaft für Softwareorganisation, which at that time was selling tickets for 30 clubs in the Bundesliga .

Digitization and Diversification

At the end of the 1990s, the company had already secured a leading position in the German market. After the conversion to a stock corporation and the renaming to CTS Eventim, Schulenberg successfully floated the company on the stock exchange in February 2000. Among other things, this enabled investments in digital platforms, which turned out to be crucial for further growth in sales and profits. In 2002, with the takeover of getgo.de, CTS Eventim finally became the largest ticket portal in Europe. The company also entered the live entertainment sector in the early 2000s, for example through acquisitions of the German promoter Dirk Becker Entertainment, Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur or Semmel Concerts . For the first time, the organization and marketing of events were bundled under one roof. As operator of the Cologne Lanxess Arena and leaseholder of the Berlin Waldbühne , CTS Eventim steadily expanded its business in this segment in the years to come.

Major international events

The following years were marked by several major international events. For example, CTS Eventim was awarded the contract to sell tickets for the soccer World Cup in Germany, the Winter Olympics in Sochi and the Summer Olympics in Rio. Stage Entertainment has been one of the most important partners of CTS Eventim since the 2010s . The takeover of various domestic and foreign companies and cooperations led to greater market power, so that CTS Eventim moved into the focus of the cartel authorities . In 2017, CTS Eventim achieved sales of more than one billion euros for the first time with a profit of over 100 million euros.

More recent developments

Most recently, the company made a name for itself in the wake of the failed introduction of a car toll in Germany . In 2018, CTS Eventim and its Austrian partner Kapsch TrafficCom were awarded the contract to collect fees from German vehicle owners . After the European Court of Justice recognized a violation of European law in the car toll, the Federal Republic of Germany terminated the contracts with the operator consortium.

CTS Eventim has been a limited partnership based on shares under German law since 2014 . This is a mixed form of partnership and corporation that ensures continuity of the company in equity measures. Areas

Ticketing

CTS Eventim takes care of the production, sale, brokerage, distribution and marketing of tickets for concerts , theater , art , sports and other events. The company has sales systems and web shops in Brazil, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Israel, Croatia, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, Spain and Hungary active. In addition to eventim.de, getgo.de, ticketonline.de, Ticketcorner and fansale.de are among the company's best-known platforms in German-speaking countries . In the 2018 financial year, CTS Eventim sold a total of around 250 million tickets worldwide.

Live entertainment

CTS Eventim takes on the planning, preparation and implementation of tours, events and festivals, especially in the music and concert sector. The subsidiaries and holdings in this area operate largely independently and are known, for example, as organizers of festivals such as “Hurricane”, “Southside”, “ Rock am Ring ”, “ Rock im Park ” or “Lucca Summer”. They have their own external presence, but are now bundled in the "Eventim Live" division. This is active in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. The live entertainment businesses now account for more than half of the sales / profit of CTS Eventim.

engagement

In 2008, CTS Eventim, together with other sponsors, ensured the long-term continuation of the renowned course for pop music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . Since then this has been called "Eventim Popkurs ". Graduates include artist Peter Fox and the band Revolverheld .

criticism

In 2014, WirtschaftsWoche described the business model of CTS Eventim as "controversial". The market power of the company, which at that time sold around 80 percent of all tickets for pop and rock concerts in Germany, was criticized. CTS Eventim reaches for “all upstream and downstream areas of the card business” and shifts card volumes to where sales bring the most profit. This is at the expense of classic ticket agencies.

In 2015 Die Welt and other media reported on the investigations of the antitrust authorities, which feared a "dominant position" of CTS Eventim. In 2017, the Federal Cartel Office prohibited the company from entering into exclusive agreements with event organizers to open up the sale of admission tickets to competitors.

The fee structure of CTS Eventim has repeatedly caused controversy. Consumer advocates particularly criticized the additional costs for self-printed tickets (“print @ home”). In 2018, the Federal Court of Justice declared this practice inadmissible and thus confirmed the rulings of the previous instances. In addition, the judges restricted excessive postage fees for the so-called “premium mailing” of tickets. CTS Eventim announced in December 2019 that it would completely forego print @ home fees in its German web shops.
