history

Construction and commissioning

The Galaxy at the equipment quay of Meyer Werft in Papenburg (1996)

The ship was laid down on May 25, 1995 with hull number 638 as the Galaxy at Meyer Werft in Papenburg as the second ship of the Century class . Compared to the type ship Century , the ship is about 15 meters longer. After completion, the ship was handed over to Celebrity Cruises on October 10, 1996 , which at that time was a subsidiary of the traditional Greek shipping company Chandris . The ship sailed under the Liberian flag with its home port Monrovia . The ship began service on December 21, 1996, cruising from Florida to the Caribbean. At that time it had 13 decks, 974 passenger cabins, four restaurants and six bistros. Ten bars, two lounges and a 11,991 m² sun deck were available to passengers . A total of 780 crew members were on board to guide and maintain the ship and to look after the guests.

On June 2, 2001, the ship Nahe IJmuiden was damaged on the propeller. The subsequent repairs were carried out by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg until June 16, 2001 .

From 2002 the ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau . In February 2008 it was named Celebrity Galaxy and has been sailing under the flag of Malta with its home port of Valletta ever since

Sale to TUI Cruises and renovation

On the pier in Puerto Del Rosario, Fuerteventura (2010), the subsequently attached “Ducktail” with the name is clearly visible

In April 2008, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. , The parent company of Celebrity Cruises announced that the Celebrity Galaxy will end its service for the shipping company in March 2009 and will then be sold to TUI Cruises, a 50:50 joint venture between TUI and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. The handover took place on March 18, 2009 in San Juan (Puerto Rico) . The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

The ship was transferred to Bremerhaven and converted from the end of March to the beginning of May 2009 in just 38 days in the dry dock of the Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven for 50 million euros. The interior, once tailored to American tastes, has largely been replaced and adapted to the European market. In order to meet the tight schedule, unnecessary walls and fixtures were removed during the transfer to Germany . In Bremerhaven, 200 balconies were then added and 202 were extended and converted into verandas . Due to the additional weight, the structure had to be partially adjusted and a steel substructure weighing around 380 tonnes - a so-called ducktail  - had to be inserted in the rear area to compensate . The area of the spa area has been doubled; Restaurants and bar areas were expanded and renewed.

On May 15, 2009, the Galaxy was renamed Mein Schiff . The new christening took place - in Low German - by Ina Müller on May 15, 2009 in the port of Hamburg in front of the fish auction hall . The name emerged as the winner of a competition that TUI Cruises held in cooperation with the illustrated magazine Bunte . The ship was launched under the Maltese flag. The language on board was German.

After the renovation, Mein Schiff was the first TUI Cruises cruise ship to resume operations on May 23, 2009 with a Baltic Sea cruise. On September 11, 2009, she set out for the first regular cruise from Hamburg along the Western European coast into the Mediterranean. In November 2010 the Mein Schiff was renamed Mein Schiff 1 .

Switch to Marella Cruises

In May 2015 it was decided that the ship would be decommissioned at TUI Cruises in 2018 and replaced by the fifth newbuild . The new Mein Schiff 1 is 52 meters longer than the previous Mein Schiff 1 and is designed for 2894 guests with double occupancy of the cabins. In April 2018, the last journey of led Singapore to Palma and ended on 11 April 2018. On 13 April 2018 the ship was within the TUI Group to Marella Cruises passed and 14 April 2018 to 13 May 2018 Cadiz at Navantia rebuilt. The Mein Schiff 1 was the end of April 2018 Marella Explorer renamed after initially named TUI Explorer should receive.

Machine system and drive

The Marella Explorer is equipped with a conventionally constructed diesel-mechanical drive system. This consists of two engine groups, each consisting of a six-cylinder and a nine-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type MAN 48 / 60B. These rotate at 500 rpm and are connected in pairs via clutches of the "Vulkan-Rato" type to a spur gear unit manufactured by Renk . Each drive group acts via a propeller shaft (diameter: 614 mm) on a four-blade controllable pitch propeller with a diameter of 5.80 m. In order to minimize vibrations and noise, the motors and gears are floating. Depending on the respective requirements (speed, weather conditions), the ship can be operated in different drive configurations.

The ship is controlled via two active rudders. As a maneuvering aid, three transverse thrusters are installed in the bow and two in the stern . Each system has an output of 1,400 kW (approx. 1,900 hp). Together with the active rudders that can be controlled via joysticks, the Marella Explorer can also be maneuvered comfortably without the assistance of a tractor. To dampen rolling movements, the ship is equipped with a pair of stabilizers from Blohm + Voss . Each fin is around 6 m long and has an effective area of 15 m².

The average fuel consumption at normal speed (15 kn) is around 60 t / d, at top speed around 140 t / d. The ship has a mass of 9,900 tons, 7,700 tons of which are below the waterline.

In normal operation, the Marella Explorer is powered by four separate generators, which are driven by six-cylinder MAN 40/54 diesel engines with an output of 4,320 kW (approx. 5875 hp) each. If the diesel generator sets are not available, an electrical output of around 5,200 kVA each can be provided via two shaft generators that are flanged to the main gearbox.

The ship's electricity requirement is around 6,000 kVA at temperatures around 20 ° C. At higher outside temperatures, the demand can rise to around 12,000 kVA due to the higher utilization of the air conditioning system.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The Marella Explorer has 307 inside and 655 outside cabins on six decks, 430 of which have a balcony. The spectrum ranges from 16 m² inside cabins to suites with 49 m² with an additional 24 m² veranda.

The ship has 13 decks, the top ten of which are accessible to passengers. Among other things, it has four restaurants, six bistros as well as 13 bars and lounges of different orientations with a total area of 4,743 m². The sun deck has an area of around 12,000 m², the pool deck 2200 m².

Various sports, sun and relaxation areas, as well as a spa and wellness area with a Finnish sauna for 54 people and a hammam of 1,700 m² are intended to complete the range of indoor cycling and cardio training. Outside there is a golf simulator, a basketball court and a jogging path. In addition to entertainment, games and a range of information, the ship has all the usual facilities such as a hospital or shopping facilities. This also includes a library, theater, internet terminals, college and conference room.
