Châteldon is roughly halfway between Vichy and Thiers , a little off the D-906 road that connects these cities. The nearest major city is Clermont-Ferrand , 45 km away. The nearest train stations are in the nearby municipalities of Ris and Puy-Guillaume , three and five kilometers away. There are regular buses from Vichy and Thiers to Puy-Guillaume and Châteldon.

The Vauziron and Chasserelle streams converge in Châteldon. In the local area there have always been springs whose water has made Châteldon famous for centuries as the place of origin of mineral water and from which even Louis XIV was supplied. However, the six old sources have dried up, and today two new sources are drawn.

Châteldon is now part of the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park .

history

The market town of Chatel-Odon was named after the castle Castrum Odonis , at whose feet it lay. Markets and trade fairs have been held here since the 13th century. The place had market rights since 1285. In the 14th century, a market hall, a judicial building and a mill were built and as a result, merchants and craftsmen settled there, especially tanners and cutlers . Franciscans came to Châteldon in the 15th century, and from 1650 also a Sisterhood of Poor Clares . Both communities were dissolved during the revolution .

Attractions

The tourist attractions include the castle from the 12th century, 3 towers and remains of walls from the medieval fortifications, the church from the 13th century, the community tower, 2 mansions and old merchants' houses. The old town hall and the market hall were closed in the 19th and 20th centuries. The castle is privately inhabited and can only be viewed from the outside.
