Chad Guy Bertrand le Clos (born April 12, 1992 in Durban ) is a South African swimmer . At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , he won the 200m butterfly race just ahead of Michael Phelps . A year later he became world champion in the 100 and 200 meter butterfly.

Career

At the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore , le Clos won five medals, including gold in the 200-meter medley swimming pool , two silver medals in butterfly swimming and one silver and one bronze medal in freestyle swimming .

In the same year he took part in the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi and also won five medals there. He won gold over 200 meters butterfly and 400 meters swimming medley and set competition records in both disciplines. He also won silver with the relay over 4 × 100 meters swimming medley and bronze with the relay over 4 × 100 and 4 × 200 meters freestyle.

At the 2010 World Short Course Championships in Dubai , le Clos won gold over the 200 meter butterfly. He swam five hundredths of a second faster than the world record holder Kaio de Almeida and eleven hundredths of a second faster than the 2008 silver medalist , László Cseh .

At the 2011 African Games in Maputo , he won a total of five gold medals and one silver medal. He won over 200 meters butterfly, 200 and 400 meters swimming medley as well as 4 × 100 meter freestyle and 4 × 100 meter swimming medley with the relay teams. He won his only silver medal over 100 meters butterfly.

On the first day of the swimming competitions of the 2012 Summer Olympics , he was fifth in the 400 meter medley; on the fourth day he won the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly in 1: 52.96 minutes and was five hundredths of a second faster than the winner of the two previous Olympic Games, Michael Phelps . On the following day, le Clos qualified for the final over 200 meters medley by finishing seventh in the semi-finals. On the seventh day he reached second place over 100 meters butterfly and took the silver medal behind Phelps, who swam 0.23 seconds faster.

At the 2013 World Championships he won the 100 and 200 meter butterfly titles. In the same year he improved the short course world record over 200 m butterfly in Eindhoven to 1: 49.04 minutes.

Also in 2013 he received the Order of Ikhamanga in silver.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , le Clos won seven medals. He won gold over 100 meters and 200 meters butterfly and set competition records in both disciplines. He also won silver with the relay in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle. He won bronze medals with the relay teams in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle and 4 × 100 meter medley as well as in the individual competition over 200 meter medley and 50 meter butterfly.

Also in 2015 in Kazan , le Clos secured the world championship title over 100 and 200 meters butterfly . At the 2016 Short Course World Championships in Ontario , she won all three butterfly distances and set the only individual world record of the championships over 100 meters with 48.08 s. In 2017 he became world champion in the 200 meter butterfly for the second time in Budapest .

At the 2019 World Swimming Championships , le Clos won the bronze medal in the 100 m and 200 m.
