David Courtney Coates

David Courtney Coates (born August 9, 1868 in Brandon, England , †  January 28, 1933 in North Hollywood , California ) was an American politician . In 1901 and 1902 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Colorado .

Career

Nothing is known about David Coates' youth and schooling. He came to Colorado, where he worked as a private businessman. At the same time he was involved in the labor and trade union movement. He became secretary of the Colorado State Federation of Labor . Politically, he was initially a member of the Democratic Party . He later joined the Socialist Party of America . During the First World War he left this party again in protest against their pacifist stance. Then he switched to the short-lived National Party .

In 1900, Coates was elected Lieutenant Governor of Colorado alongside James Bradley Orman . He held this office between 1901 and 1902. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1901, on behalf of Governor Orman, he was involved in successful negotiations to settle a miners' strike that had already escalated into violent rioting.

Coates was also a delegate to the inaugural meeting of the Industrial Workers of the World . He was a friend of William Dudley Haywood . In 1910 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .
