William H. Meyer (politician, 1847)

William H. Meyer (born April 14, 1847 in Hanover , Kingdom of Hanover ; †  August 22, 1923 in Costilla County , Colorado ) was a German-American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Colorado.

Career

William Meyer came to the United States around 1862. He first lived in the states of Kentucky and Missouri as well as in the New Mexico Territory and worked as a rancher. Between about 1865 and 1867 he settled in Costilla County. There he acquired a large land mass on which he ran cattle on a large scale. He soon belonged to the cattle barons in his homeland. Meyer was also interested in politics. He became a member of the Colorado Territory House of Representatives in 1870 and 1874 . Between 1867 and 1876 he was employed by the district and court administration of his homeland. In 1875 he took part as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of the future state of Colorado. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was a member of the Colorado Senate from 1877 to 1879 .

In 1882 Meyer was elected Lieutenant Governor of Colorado alongside James Benton Grant . He held this office between 1883 and 1885. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Between 1899 and 1903 and again from 1907 to 1911 he was state senator again. His main political goal was to improve education in his state. In 1889 he became a curator of the State Normal School . He died on August 22, 1923.
