Francis Patrick Carney

Francis Patrick Carney (born September 20, 1846 in County Fermanagh , Ireland , †  May 4, 1902 in Ouray , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Colorado.

Career

In 1859, Francis Carney and his family came to New York City from their Northern Irish homeland . In 1877 he moved to Ouray, Colorado, where he worked as a construction worker, in the mining industry and formed unions. Politically, he joined the Populist Party . Between 1893 and 1895 he was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives ; from 1895 to 1899 he was a member of the State Senate .

In 1898 Carney was elected lieutenant governor of the state of Colorado on the side of Charles Spalding Thomas . He held this office between 1899 and 1901. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After the end of his tenure as Lieutenant Governor, Francis Carney suffered from health problems. He died in Ouray on May 4, 1902.
