George L. Brown

George Leslie Brown (born July 1, 1926 in Lawrence , Kansas , †  March 31, 2006 in Boca Raton , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1975 and 1979 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Colorado .

Career

In 1944, George Brown graduated from Lawrence Liberty Memorial High School . During the final phase of World War II , he served in the US Army Air Corps . Then he continued his own training. By 1950 he studied journalism at the University of Kansas . He was also enrolled at Harvard Business School and the University of Colorado and the University of Denver . He worked as a journalist in Colorado for 14 years. He worked for the Denver Post and has hosted radio talk shows in Denver . Brown was also the first African American newspaper editor in the mid Rocky Mountains . He also served on the board of the Denver City Agency for Social Housing. He has also given lectures at the University of Colorado and the University of Denver.

Politically, Brown joined the Democratic Party . In 1955 and 1956 he was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives ; from 1956 to 1975 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1974 he was elected lieutenant governor of the state of Colorado alongside Richard Lamm . He held this office between 1975 and 1979. He was Deputy Governor . Along with Mervyn M. Dymally of California , he was the first African American since the time of the Reconstruction to be elected lieutenant governor of a state.

After serving as Lieutenant Governor, George Brown worked for Grumman Aerospace Corporation . There he soon became one of their vice-presidents. He later worked as a lobbyist. In 1994 he worked for the Whitten & Diamond law firm in Washington, DC He also worked in other business areas. Since 1996 he has had his main residence in Florida. He died on March 31, 2006 in Boca Raton.
