The Boy Needs Fresh Air is a German feature film by Caroline Link that was released in German cinemas on December 25, 2018. It is a film adaptation of the autobiography The Boy Needs Fresh Air - My Childhood and I by Hape Kerkeling . At the awarding of the German Film Prize , The Boy Must Go to Fresh Air was awarded the bronze Lola. It was also the most popular of all German films launched in German cinemas in 2018.

action

The film shows Hape Kerkeling's childhood and youth in the Ruhr area town of Recklinghausen . In the early 1970s, the eight-year-old Hans-Peter family moved from the rural part of Recklinghausen, where they lived with their father's grandparents, to the house of their mother's grandparents in the north of the city. Hans-Peter grew up here. His grandmother Änne runs a corner shop . There he observes and overhears the gossip and gossip stories of the customers and later plays them to his grandmother in a comedic parody. He also makes his family laugh with his parodies of people around him or celebrities from television. His father is a carpenter and often works longer on assembly, and then the housework and upbringing of Hans-Peter and his big brother Matthes weigh on his mother Margret, who often feels overwhelmed and lonely.

Grandma Änne buys a horse for her grandchildren, including a carriage and stable. Hans-Peter is an unsportsmanlike, chubby child. When he can't get on his horse the right way around the first time riding, even with help, he decides to use his awkwardness in a comedic way. He just rides a few laps sitting upside down and amuses the whole family.

The coexistence of the extended family with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and cousins is not smooth, but characterized by human warmth and solidarity, which is expressed in the exuberant and extravagant family celebrations. Both grandparents and especially the two grandmothers take loving care of the boy's upbringing. They are caregivers and emotional support for Hans-Peter. When he appears disguised as a princess at a carnival party, some of them roll their eyes in amusement, but Grandma Bertha resolutely declares: “Hans-Peter remains a bachelor! And now it's over! ”Shortly before her death, Grandma Änne predicts a great career for him.

After an unfortunate operation of the maxillary sinus , which caused her to lose her sense of smell and taste, the mother's state of health deteriorates, her psychological problems intensify and she falls more and more into depression . Hans-Peter is therefore less and less able to cheer her up with his jokes. In this depressing situation, his grandfather expresses the statement that makes up the film's title and spends two carefree weeks in the mountains with Hans-Peter. Meanwhile, the mother's condition continued to deteriorate, but she refused a hospital stay.

One evening his mother - her health weakened and worn down by her depressive states - takes her own life with a mix of drugs. She loses consciousness while Hans-Peter - not correctly assessing the seriousness of the situation - falls asleep next to her in bed. When the father comes home from the night shift in the morning, the mother comes to a clinic, but in the end any help comes too late and she dies there after a while. For Hans-Peter, his mother's suicide is a traumatic experience. During the funeral, he suddenly throws his bouquet in front of the coffin with a cry of rage, runs outside and crawls there. Even in this deep crisis, his family welcomes him understandingly. He is complicit in the death of his mother. The boy's voiceover voice can be heard repeatedly in the film, stating that he should have worked harder to save his mother.

After the mother's death, the father's grandparents move into the house and take care of the further upbringing of Hans-Peter. During a home visit, for which Hans-Peter skillfully prepared grandma and grandpa, Ms. Höttermann from the youth welfare office agrees with this solution.

When Hans-Peter is supposed to take on the main role of Hans Dampf in a play at school , he initially refuses. When he finally changes his mind, there is only a small supporting role left as a grouchy neighbor with a single line of text. He spontaneously developed this appearance so satirically that he made the entire hall laugh, although his disguise resembled the later Horst Schlämmer.

In the end, the camera pans to the old corner pub that still exists today. Inside, a report by Horst Schlämmer, a fictional character of the now successful television star Hape Kerkeling, is shown on a large television . In the last film sequence, all relatives and friends run happily across the meadows. Little Hans-Peter turns around and sees the adult Hape Kerkeling waving to him. In the final monologue from the off he realizes how much it have shaped all these people.

Age ratings and reviews

In Germany the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. The statement of reasons for release states: “Children from the age of 6 can follow the story and find a positive and strong figure to identify with the young Hape Kerkeling. There are occasional serious and sad scenes, but these are always quickly resolved and balanced by the loving care of the family. The subjects of death and depression are dealt with in a way that elementary school children are not overwhelmed. ”Jens Maier from Stern Online notes that the film adaptation moves so many people to tears, on the one hand because of the plot itself, while the Hape Kerkelings suffered from severe depression mother suicide commits: "The little Hape is next to her in bed. A traumatic experience for the little boy - and a heartbreaking scene for the audience. " The boy has to go out into the fresh air , however, is not a deadly sad drama that permanently depresses the tear gland, but a film with many cheerful moments, Maier continues:" He makes the audience laugh and cry. A rollercoaster of emotions. "

Katrin Hoffmann from epd Film thinks that Caroline Link turned Hape Kerkeling's autobiography into a big-hearted and very humorous film that never crosses the line of slapstick: “In this respect, she stays with her very own topic, the family saga. Hardly anyone succeeds as well as Link in hitting the subtle psychological nuances, telling whole stories with looks and small gestures. “However, the film would be nothing without its great young lead actor Julius Weckauf , who effortlessly acts between comedy and grief, according to Hoffmann further.

Krischan Koch from the radio station NDR Info considers the child actor Julius Weckauf, who portrays the young Hape Kerkeling, to be a "stroke of luck" and believes that "Hape Kerkeling looked and behaved the same way as a child". “The atmosphere in the middle-class Ruhrpott of the 1970s” would also be “hit” in the film. For the reviewer, The Boy Must Go Out into the Fresh Air is a “wonderful family film ”.

The German Film and Media Assessment gave the film the rating of particularly valuable . The jury statement states: “Kerkeling's happiness is born out of deep pain, which the entertaining film brings the viewer very close. Link looks at this petty-bourgeois world with great kindness and honesty, she keeps the balance between tragic-comedy and seriousness like a dream. She proves the right feeling for the sound in every situation, showing a courage for sentimentality that is unique in German cinema, which she always doses correctly. "

Use in school lessons

In December 2018 the film was presented by kinofenster.de as "Film of the Month". In addition, the online portal offers material on the film for lessons from the 8th grade. Christian Horn writes there that the director uses the tried and tested strategies of conventional narrative cinema , including a biopic-typical voice-over commentary that introduces an extensive introduction to Hans-Peter's living conditions, and the frequent use of Niki Reiser's film music increases the effect of the cheerful and sad moments.
