The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1987 took place under the title A Song for Brussels .

The Bayerischer Rundfunk kept the mode of the previous years due to the multiple successes in the last decade.
A jury of thirteen professionals from the entertainment industry selected the twenty semi-finalists from 574 submissions, from which the radio listeners chose the twelve finalists.
After the preliminary decision, which this year took place five weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest , 519 radio listeners and television viewers were interviewed by telephone after the twelve tracks had been run by the polling institute Infratest . During the broadcast, they had to rate the twelve titles using a given point scale.
