The Senator for Climate Protection, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing is the State Ministry for Environmental Issues, Building and Transport Infrastructure and Agriculture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . Maike Schaefer (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) has been Senator for Environment, Building and Transport since August 2019 , succeeding Joachim Lohse (Greens).

In Senate Wedemeier I , until October 1987, there were separate departments of the Senator for Construction with Senator Bernd Meyer (SPD) and the Senator for Environmental Protection with Senator Eva-Maria Lemke (SPD) at the head.

In the Senate Wedemeier II the resort was Senator for the October 1987 to February 7, 1989 Environmental Protection, Construction and Urban Development of Senator Lemke out-Schulte. After that, the department was again separated into Senator for Construction under Senator Konrad Kunick (SPD) and Senator for Environmental Protection and Urban Development under Senator Lemke-Schulte (SPD).

Also in Senate Wedemeier III from 1991 to 1995 this separation of departments remained, whereby Senator Ralf Fücks ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Bremen ) headed the department of environmental protection and urban development until February 23, 1995 and Senator Lemke (SPD) was in charge of construction. This “traffic light coalition” also broke up in 1995 due to a conflict with the Bremen FDP over the urban development and land policy of Senator Fücks. The cause for this was the so-called " birdie affair ": the environmental department had reported the Hemelinger Marsch industrial park as an EU bird sanctuary , although the economic department had planned intensive commercial use of the area. From February to July 1995, Culture and Youth Senator Helga Trüpel (Greens) was also responsible for this Senate department.

In the Scherf I Senate from 1995 to 1999, the division of the construction, transport and urban development departments remained with Senator Bernt Schulte (CDU) and environmental protection and women with Senator Christine Wischer (SPD), who also headed the health, youth and social affairs department.

It was not until the Senate Scherf II from 1999 to 2003, under Senator Wischer (SPD), that the Senator for Building and Environment shared the department with the departments of environmental protection , area- related environmental protection , media- related environmental protection , urban development and housing, as well as building and traffic law .

From the Senate Scherf III and the Senate Böhrnsen I from 2003 to 2007, the department was called Construction, Environment and Transport , and was headed by Jens Eckhoff (CDU) until February 2006 and Ronald-Mike Neumeyer (CDU). In Senate Böhrnsen II from 2007 to 2011 the department was called Senator for Environment, Building, Transport and Europe and was under Senator Reinhard Loske (Greens). Since 2011 in Senate Böhrnsen III and Senate Sieling (from 2015) this has again been the name of the Environment, Construction and Transport department with Senator Joachim Lohse (Greens) at the helm. The department of climate protection, environment, mobility, urban development and housing construction in the Senate Bovenschulte has existed since August 2019 . Representatives of the Senator are the Councilors of State Ronny Meyer (Greens) (Environment and Transport) and, from February 2020, Gabriele Nießen (Construction, Urban Development, Administration).

The state ministry , which also fulfills the communal tasks for the city of Bremen, is divided into several departments and departments:

  • The Central and Departmental Planning department coordinates and assumes the cross-sectional tasks for the department. This includes looking after 630 employees in the six departments, personnel development and organizational adjustments.
  • The Environment Department is responsible for all matters relating to environmental and nature conservation in Bremen. Location

At the beginning of the 1980s, the former Senator's Department for Construction moved into a new building that had been built on the north side of the Ansgarikirchhof . The departments for town planning and building regulations as well as the environmental authorities were initially spread over several locations, for example in Langenstraße , Am Wall , in Große Weidestraße and in Theodor-Heuss-Allee . After the so-called Siemens high-rise , Contrescarpe 72, in the Bahnhofsvorstadt , a branch of the Siemens group, became vacant, several departments with around 250 employees were gradually concentrated here from 2000.
