Important senators from 1700 to 1918

After 1813 the Bremen council - called Senate from 1822 - consisted of four and from 1849 two mayors and the councilors, who were called senators from 1813/1820 . The senators were responsible for a wide range of areas until 1918; it was only from 1919 that certain departments were assigned to the senators, such as the Senator for the Interior . In accordance with Article 120 of the state constitution of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , which came into force in 1947 , the Senate decides on its division of responsibilities. Since then, each member of the Senate has been assigned at least one division.
