The rank hierarchy of the members of the barracked units of the MdI of the GDR was indicated by about ten centimeters long shoulder pieces on the service and field service uniforms.

  • Student officers were equated with subordinates. In the first year of study, these wore the same shoulder pieces, but with a crossbar at the end of the arch. Rank group of officers of the middle career

The shoulder pieces of the lieutenants ' and captains' green uniforms were made of flat silver cord. The lower lieutenant's gold-colored star of rank was placed in the center of the lower edge of the shoulder piece. The second lieutenant was distinguished by a star of rank, the lieutenant two stars placed next to each other, and the first lieutenant three stars of rank formed into an even triangle. The captain had another star above the triangular formation. For the field service uniform - dark green shoulder pieces (identical in size and shape to those of the VP aspirants from around 1980) with dull gray star stars - accordingly.

Rank group of staff officers

  • In a VP readiness the highest rank was that of the VP lieutenant colonel ( commander only ). At the officers' college of the MdI , the teaching officers and in the DVP Blumberg office in Freudenberg the deputy head and their deputies could receive this rank. The head of the Unterführer school in Dresden, which existed until 1985, achieved the rank of Colonel of the VP.
  • The highest rank of the VP Colonel could be achieved in the intelligence service and in the 'Office of the DVP Blumberg' in Freudenberg (only commander | head of the office).
  • Only the Minister of the Interior could achieve the highest military rank in the GDR, that of an army general . Nevertheless, officers in the service area of ​​the People's Police standby could also achieve much higher ranks (general rank), such as the commander of the OHS of the MdI .

Remarks:

  1. With the introduction of the new military service law of the GDR from 1982, the rank of sergeant was no longer awarded to active conscripts. The rank of sergeant in the VP was held by reservists who had achieved this rank in accordance with the old GDR Military Service Act of 1962.
