Diplomatic license plate (Great Britain)
British diplomatic license plates, like normal license plates, have a white background on the front of the vehicle and yellow on the rear. They were introduced in 1979 and initially show a three-digit number that defines the country of origin or the organization in more detail. This is followed by the letter D for diplomats and an X for accredited non-diplomatic staff. Finally, a consecutive three-digit serial number appears, which usually starts at 101 for D signs or 700 for consular posts. X-plates show serial numbers from 400.
While some countries (e.g. Norway ) have in some cases switched to issuing normal license plates to diplomats for security reasons, many ambassador vehicles in Great Britain have custom license plates that can often be easily assigned to a country. Such so-called vanity plates usually show a 1 and the abbreviation of the country with two or three letters. For example, the Ambassador of Namibia has the 1 NAM label .
