Engelhartszell is a market town with 922 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Schärding in the Austrian Innviertel in Upper Austria .

The community is located in the judicial district of Schärding and is known for the Trappist monastery Engelszell located here .

geography

Engelhartszell is located in the Upper Danube Valley at 302 m altitude in the Innviertel. The extension is 9.2 km from north to south and 7.4 km from west to east. The total area is 18.89 km², 57.4% of the area is forested, 28.2% of the area is used for agriculture.

The main town of the community is Engelhartszell.

history

The traces of settlement in the region go back to Roman times. In the Itinerarium Antonini , a Roman street directory from the 2nd century AD, the place is listed as Station Stanacum .

In 1840, remains of Roman walls were discovered by the Schlögener Excavation Association near the former Wagner restaurant in the Oberranna district. They were located directly on the Roman Limes (today Nibelungen Strasse). Its function as a border fortification has been proven beyond doubt since the excavations in 2017. It is a late antique burgus that had a thermal bath installed in one of its towers . Engelhartszell was first mentioned in a document in 1194. The Engelszell Abbey with its rococo church, located near the village, was founded in 1293 by Bishop Bernhard (Wernhart) von Prambach , originally as a Cistercian monastery . In 1786 Engelszell was abolished by Emperor Joseph II , and since 1926 it has been the only Trappist monastery in Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1945 Austria and with it Upper Austria was restored. In 1956, the Jochenstein Danube power plant was built in the municipality, about one kilometer northwest of the village .

Population development

In 1991 the municipality had 1,160 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 1,169 inhabitants. The increase occurred despite the negative birth balance due to the positive migration balance . From 2001 to 2011 both balances were negative, so that the population decreased to 964 people in 2011.

Donaunixe Isa pedestrian ferry

Engelhartszell is located on Nibelungen Straße B 130, which leads from Eferding to Passau.

Pedestrian ferry Engelhartszell – Jochenstein: At Engelhartszell, a ferry called Donaunixe Isa crosses the Danube to Jochenstein in Bavaria. It is only in operation in the summer season and only transports pedestrians and cyclists. The latter, who are on the Danube Cycle Path, also use them to visit Engelszell Abbey , as the German bank has the quieter street here.

education

The Pfarrcaritas runs a kindergarten in the market town. There is a primary school and a regional music school.

The Caritas Upper Austria offers the elderly in the retirement home St. Bernard.

• Engelszell Abbey : The Abbey was founded in 1293 as a Cistercian monastery. Today it is the only Trappist monastery in Austria.
• Engelhartszell parish church : late Gothic church, choir 1459, nave 1503; Consecrated in 1509 by Bishop Urban of Passau. Baroque style in the 18th century. Old gravestones are worth seeing on the outer walls.
