The Eurofins Scientific , based in Luxembourg is a listed group in the analysis laboratories .

The group offers bioanalytical services worldwide , primarily in the areas of food and feed, pharmaceuticals and the environment. Eurofins is active in the segments of laboratory testing of food, animal feed, environmental samples and for pharmaceuticals, biotech and agricultural science. The company is the world market leader in food analysis and the European market leader in environmental analysis.

Eurofins is divided into the four business areas of food, environment, pharmaceuticals and product testing and operates laboratories in around 170 locations worldwide. Eurofins Scientific employs around 35,000 people in around 190 laboratories in 37 countries (as of May 2018).

history

Eurofins Scientific was founded in Nantes in 1987 to market the patented SNIF-NMR technology. It was used to test the splashing of wine as well as the origin and purity of many drinks and foods in general. The FINS in the company name goes back to the French abbreviation for the English S ite-specific N atural I sotopic F ractionation.

With the takeover of the Dr. Specht in Hamburg, who was responsible for the development of § 64 Method L 00.00-34 (DFG S-19) at the height of the environmental movement , gave the company a competitive advantage in the field of pesticide analysis that continues to this day. In 2015 , the company invested € 90 million in the centralization of food analysis on the Eurofins Campus Hamburg. At the competence center, among other things, method development and validation for detection methods of genetically modified organisms (GMO), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) for high-throughput analysis in relation to the determination of the authenticity or origin of food as well as the determination of the residual DNA for food enzymes requiring EU approval , additives , flavors, food supplements and feed additives .

In 2017, the company expanded into laboratory medicine for the first time with the acquisition of Hygel, the largest provider of medical diagnostic services in North Rhine-Westphalia .

structure

The company's shares have been traded on the Paris Stock Exchange since 1997 ( Euronext Paris since 2000 ) and are part of the SBF 250 , CAC Mid 100 and Next150 stock indices . 64% of the shares are in free float , 36% in the hands of the Martin family (2020). In 2012 the company changed its legal form from a Société Anonyme to a Societas Europaea and relocated its headquarters from Nantes , France to Luxembourg .

The group grows through takeovers of small and medium-sized companies that specialize in their subject or are combined in larger regional units. These are controlled by foreign holdings, which has advantages in terms of tax law for the entire group and does not require the formation of a group works council under works constitution law. The companies work comparatively decentralized. The regional managing directors are also largely autonomous .

The growth of the group through the acquisition of laboratories was financed through share issues in 2016 and 2017, but also through borrowing. To compensate, the growth rates must be kept continuously high. After a takeover, the financial accounting is first integrated, the logo changed, later the LIMS migrated. Eurofins then tries to drive automation forward in order to achieve efficiency gains.

engagement

The group of companies promotes young academics by supervising doctoral theses . The laboratory group also finances incentive systems for young scientists . It also offers young researchers the opportunity to get started with analytical chemistry . However, promoting traditional disciplines such as food chemistry remains the main focus of the family business. In addition, the practical year for food chemists can be completed in the laboratories for food analysis and residue analysis.

Eurofins Analytics on the Hamburg campus is committed to association work and provides numerous volunteer representatives for this purpose . The company itself was awarded the family-friendly company award by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce , the Chamber of Crafts and the City of Hamburg supported by the non-profit Hertie Foundation .

The research and development department is involved in the OLEUM joint project funded by the EU Commission , which is coordinated by the University of Bologna . The project to combat unfair competition in olive oil is supported by chemometrists from Lablicate, based at the University of Hamburg , who are responsible for the successful open source project OpenChrom . The company is also a partner in the FoodAuthent joint project funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture with the aim of establishing fingerprinting processes in food control .

Ransomware

On the first weekend in June 2019, the company reported a security incident involving blackmail trojans and took numerous IT systems offline. The company tried to restore systems from uninfected backup copies. In Great Britain, where Eurofins does the forensic analysis for the police, court hearings had to be postponed. Eventually, Eurofins paid the ransom to the blackmailers and resumed normal operations three weeks later. Eurofins itself offers information security services , but was surprised by the new malware from the highly qualified perpetrators. The impact on the Group's financial results is considered to be material.

Data manipulation

The laboratory director of Eurofins QC laboratories in Southampton (Pennsylvania) was prepared by an audit because of falsification of technical records displayed in hundreds of cases. Raw data was copied and manipulated. The laboratory has been accreditation withdrawn and imposed a fine of $ 600,000.
