Location of Fizulis in Azerbaijan

Füzuli , also Fizuli, is a rayon in southern Azerbaijan on the Iranian border. The capital of the district is the city of Füzuli . About 20% of the rayon bordering Nagorno-Karabakh has been occupied by the Armenian army as a buffer zone with Azerbaijan since August 1993 , including the city of Fizuli.

The rayon has an area of ​​1361 km². The Aras River forms the border with the Iranian province of Ardabil .

population

According to Azerbaijani data, the rayon had 111,900 inhabitants in 2009. These were spread over one city and 73 settlements and villages, although the city has been abandoned since the invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh troops .

Economy and Transport

The region is dominated by agriculture. Wine, vegetables and grain are grown and cattle is raised. There are several dairies, a reinforced concrete precast plant, quarries, and gin and wine production facilities.

Attractions

In the district there is a caravanserai from 1648 and the Hadji Giyaseddin mosque from 1682, as well as the mausoleums of Akhmedalilar, Babids and Mirali. The remains of prehistoric settlements can be found in the Azykh caves.
