Folklore - The Festival in the Kulturpark (short: Folklore , also Folklore in the Garden ) was an annual music festival in Wiesbaden between 1977 and 2015 . After 2009 the festival had around 20,000 visitors a year on all three days. Musically, the festival was assigned to many genres, in addition to rock , pop and hip-hop , reggae artists are also among the performing acts. In addition to music, the festival was also characterized by culinary delights and stands from political and social initiatives and also offered street theater and family programs.
history
The first festival took place in 1977 as a music festival for families in the Reisinger facilities (at the main train station ). It was organized by the city youth welfare office almost from the start.
As early as 1978, the festival was moved to the Schloss Freudenberg park, where it took place until 2006. Due to up to 60,000 visitors in 1995 and the fact that the venue was too small for this number of visitors, the program was geared towards a younger target group in order to reduce the number of visitors. However, this also led to a decline in income and the deficit rose to up to 80,000 euros in 2001. In 2004, it was decided to move to the grounds of the Schlachthof cultural center and the organization was entrusted to the operators of the cultural center. The city continued to subsidize the festival with over 100,000 euros per year, but no longer covers the loss, which saves 80,000 euros in two years. Up until 2006 the festival took place in the Freudenberg Castle Park and until then was called “Folklore in the Garden”.
The move did not take place until 2007, and the festival opened on the slaughterhouse site in August. The addition “in the garden” was deleted from the name and the new location met with a lot of criticism, not least because the site had little green space at the time and renovation was still to come. Since the move, the discussion about noise pollution has been ongoing, as the new site is close to an established residential area. In order to find a consensus between residents and visitors, technical possibilities of volume reduction are also being considered.
In 2014 a change in the concept for the festival was presented by the organizer. After the festival in 2015, the organizer announced that the new concept was not working as expected and the city grant was canceled, so the festival was discontinued. Further efforts to revive the festival also failed. In 2019 the city of Wiesbaden announced the final end for folklore.
