A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy vs. Jason is a 2003 horror film directed by Ronny Yu . It is a crossover between the series Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th.

action

Freddy Krueger literally burns in hell and is forgotten on Elm Street. To regain his strength, Freddy influences the killer Jason Voorhees . Jason goes to Elm Street and murders a teenager. The police quickly believe that Freddy Krueger is back, and Freddy returns to the dreams of the Elm Street children. But he can't kill again yet. The new kids on Elm Street don't know Freddy and so aren't afraid of him.

Jason keeps killing. Through the conversations between the adults, the children also hear the name "Freddy", so that it begins to appear again in the young people's dreams. However, Jason kills a sleeping girl, who is suffering from Freddy's threat in her dream, and takes away a possible victim from him. A battle of evil against evil begins. Freddy puts himself in Jason's dreams and searches for his fears. Meanwhile, Lori, Will, Linderman and Kia, the last survivors of a group that wants to fight the two, try to bring the two " legends " to Crystal Lake, where they can then fight an even fight.

Freddy finds out that Jason is afraid of water and takes advantage of it. Jason seems to be drowning in his dream but is saved by Lori, who is able to invade the dream. The final battle then takes place at Crystal Lake. Lori manages to pull Freddy into reality, and Jason and Freddy fight each other by all means. Lori and Will then blow them up - Jason seems defeated, but Freddy rises out of the water. Before he strikes with Jason's machete , Jason rams his torn arm into his body from behind. He goes on his knees and Lori beheads him with Jason's machete. Jason and Freddy fall into the lake and sink. The last two survivors appear to have been saved.

In the end, Jason climbs out of the lake in the morning mist. He holds Freddy's head in his hand, who winks at the audience.

Alternative ending (only seen on the DVD version, but now also in the bonus material of the Blu-ray Disc):

Two months later, Lori and Will have a lunchtime, where they briefly talk about the past events beforehand. In the middle of the lovemaking, Lori gasps in pain. Will starts up, grins like Freddy and grabs Lori by the neck. He holds up his right hand, the fingers of which are growing the blades of Freddy's clawed glove, and strikes. The film ends with Freddy's laugh.

Reviews

The Rotten Tomatoes website found a value of 41 percent, based on 158 counted reviews. The side's consensus is that fans of the two horror film franchises Freddy vs. Jason will "enjoy", but for everyone else he is only "a splatter film based on a familiar pattern". In the Internet Movie Database , the film received an average of 5.8 out of 10 points.

Sascha Westphal wrote in the daily newspaper Die Welt on November 20, 2003 that the film initially “takes the typical conventions of slasher film to extremes”, but then develops “completely into an homage to Japanese monster cinema”. Westphal came to the conclusion that one had "not seen such a wonderfully self-ironic and at the same time so intense orgy of destruction [...] from Hollywood for a long time".

Harald Peters wrote in the daily newspaper that director Ronny Yu put “all the ingredients” into the film, “that a proper slasher film needs: the virgin, the bitch, the bad boys and the hearty orgy in between.” The bottom line is that Peters named Freddy vs. Jason was "a pissed off, made mess", which should be understood as "of course [as] a compliment".

Cinema drew the following conclusion: "Lively effects and a furious finale give the showdown of the horror icons cult status."

The lexicon of international films spoke of a "senseless as well as tiring hybrid of horror series", "which relies on superficial satisfaction through the most brutal rollercoaster cinema".

Gross profit

Freddy vs. Jason is the most expensive film of both series with a budget of 30 million US dollars and was a success in 2003 - it grossed around 117 million US dollars at the box office worldwide.

background

  • The English subtitle A Nightmare On Friday The 13th is a combination of the English titles of the individual film series of the horror protagonists, ie from Freddy's “ A Nightmare on Elm Street ” and Jason's “ Friday the 13th ”.
  • Long after the script was written, New Line Cinema ran out of money. The huge production of The Lord of the Rings had driven the studio to the brink of ruin. It wasn't until the Ring trilogy became a worldwide success that there was money again for productions like the clash between Krueger and Voorhees.
  • The duel Freddy vs. Jason is announced in Jason Goes to Hell (1993): Freddy's claw hand takes Jason's mask at the end of the film.
  • Yu wanted to show the difference in height compared to Robert Englund (1.78 m), who played Freddy Krueger , even more blatantly as a kind of " David versus Goliath effect" and hired Ken Kirzinger (1.96 m). Quite a few genre fans were disappointed, while others were very impressed by Kirzinger's portrayal as Jason and found him better than the former actor Kane Hodder (1.91 m). Still, Kane Hodder was very disappointed with this decision.
  • The film was originally supposed to come out with three different closing scenes: Freddy wins in one, Jason in one, and in the third version neither wins. The latter is that of the known version. A defeat of one of the two opponents would have seriously disappointed the fans of the loser.
  • An alternative ending saw a love scene between Lori and Will, in which Will is "obsessed" with Krueger and accordingly wants to kill Lori. Neither Ronny Yu nor Robert Englund liked this ending and so it was left with the ending, in which Jason climbs out of Crystal Lake with Freddy's head still alive. The alternate ending is included on the 2 Disc Edition DVD.
  • A sequel was planned for a long time. The main character Ash, known from the Tanz der Teufel trilogy, should be there . The film is on hold, but there are some comics for this duel.
  • The news channel that runs in psychiatry is called KRGR , a modification of "Krueger" in which the vowels have been left out.
  • When the youngsters meet again at school in the morning after the first murders of Jason Voorhees, the dark-skinned Kia, played by actress Kelly Rowland , describes the local police who would blame Blake Mueller, played by actor David Kopp, for the murders " To make a Columbine thing out of it ". Kia is referring to the rampage at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999.
  • When the young people drive back to Elm Street after the massacre of machete killer Jason at the night rave in the minibus run by Will Rollins, played by actor Jason Ritter , a white skull, the logo of the American punk, hangs in the vehicle on the rearview mirror. Rock band Misfits .
  • A total of around 1,200 liters of film blood was used.
  • In the fall of 2005, the film was named the bloodiest horror film to date by FamilyMediaGuide for its 86 impalements, 20 severed limbs, and 14 fatal electric shocks .
  • An early script version moved the beginning of the film into the Middle Ages.
  • The original plan was for the film to end in Hell, with Freddy and Jason chained to face each other. Pinhead (from the Hellraiser series) should now join in to inquire about the problem at hand. However, Pinhead's appearance would have caused excessive costs ( royalties ), so this ending was discarded.
  • Kelly Rowland , a member of the band Destiny's Child , plays the role of Kia in the film , who survives almost to the end.
  • Ken Kirzinger played in the movie Jason takes Manhattan . He's the bar owner Jason throws in the mirror.

The soundtrack of the same name for the film was released on August 11, 2003 via the record company Roadrunner Records, which specializes in a wide variety of heavy metal and hard rock . The score composed by Graeme Revell was also published by Varèse Sarabande .
