The Friedrich-August-Grube nature reserve is a nature reserve around the former Friedrich-August-Grube mine near Horbach in the Hotzenwald , Waldshut district .
Nickel ore and magnetic gravel were extracted in the mine . The Friedrich-August-Grube has been designated as a nature reserve with the number 3.270 since April 11, 2005. The 9 hectares of protected area also include three rock groups made of gneiss north of the mine and the silted up areas of the neighboring monastery pond . The mine was named after Friedrich August Walchner, who first recognized the nickel content of the ores in 1847.
