The 2019/20 season of the Regionalliga is the twelfth season of the Regional Football League as the fourth-highest division in Germany. Four teams have been promoted to the 3rd division since the 2018/19 season. This season, the champions of the regional leagues Southwest, Bavaria and North each have a direct climber. The champions of the Regionalliga Nordost and Regionalliga West play in a promotion play-off for the fourth promotion place.

Promotion Games

The best teams eligible for promotion in the Northeast and West regional leagues take part in the promotion games to the 3rd division . The winner after the first and second leg is promoted. The first leg was scheduled for June 25, the second leg for June 30, 2020. Lok Leipzig had home rights in the first leg, the second leg may not take place in Verl due to a decision by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and has instead been moved to the Bielefeld SchücoArena .

If teams did not participate, or if no team from a regional league had qualified athletically, byes would have been awarded.

The following teams qualified for the promotion games:

  • Champion of the Regionalliga Nordost: 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig (according to the quotient rule)
  • Vice champion of the Regionalliga West: SC Verl (according to the quotient rule and the waiver of the first place)

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, match operations in all five regional leagues were initially declared suspended in March 2020 and, with the exception of Bavaria and in contrast to the three higher leagues, were not resumed later. In the Regionalliga Nordost, Lok Leipzig was declared champion by quotient rule, in the southwest the table leader and quotient winner 1. FC Saarbrücken. The representatives of the Regionalliga Bayern voted at the beginning of June 2020 to resume play. However, the season will only continue in autumn without the designated leader of the table and club Türkgücü Munich with only 17 teams registered for promotion. At an association day of the NFV , VfB Lübeck is also to be determined as a climber by quotient rule.
