Spain and Belgium, fourth in the 1986 World Cup, dominated Group E ahead of Uruguay and South Korea. Spain struggled with a goalless draw in their first game against the Urus, but were then able to beat South Korea (3: 1) and the Belgians 2: 1 in a captivating game, which led to group victory. The Belgians clearly distanced South Korea (2: 0) and Uruguay (3: 1) with their outstanding director Enzo Scifo, but showed weaknesses in the final despite great skill. For the South Americans from Montevideo only the meager 1-0 win against the Asians remained as reparation, which was just enough for the former world champion to reach the last sixteen.

Shortly before the final whistle for extra time, the substitute midfielder David Platt hit the goal of the hitherto insurmountable goalkeeper Michel Preud'homme. This enabled England to avoid a penalty shoot-out against Belgium, where the team traditionally had its difficulties - and would have again.
