Spain and Belgium, fourth in the 1986 World Cup, dominated Group E ahead of Uruguay and South Korea. Spain struggled with a goalless draw in their first game against the Urus, but were then able to beat South Korea (3: 1) and the Belgians 2: 1 in a captivating game, which led to group victory. The Belgians clearly distanced South Korea (2: 0) and Uruguay (3: 1) with their outstanding director Enzo Scifo, but showed weaknesses in the final despite great skill. For the South Americans from Montevideo only the meager 1-0 win against the Asians remained as reparation, which was just enough for the former world champion to reach the last sixteen.
Round of 16
73,303 | Olympic Stadium Rome | Italy | Uruguay | George Courtney ( England ) | 2: 0 (0: 0) | 1-0 Schillaci (65th) 2-0 Serena (85th) |
Host Italy remained clean in the round of 16. The goals of the new star Schillaci and substitute Serena were enough against the Uruguayans, who were harmless in attack. The whole of Italy celebrated the southern Italian Schillaci, who before the World Cup did not even have a regular place with his club Juventus Turin.
