The first documented mention of Gattendorf dates back to 1234. The Gattendorf manor was owned by the von Sparneck family for a long time . In the 17th century the Gattendorf estate with Hartmannsreuth was owned by the von Streitbergs.
At the end of the 18th century, the Gattendorf manor belonged to the barons of Reitzenstein , a Vogtland nobility (see also list of Frankish knight families ). With the Prussian principality of Bayreuth, it fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810.
