Gukowo ( Russian Гуково ) is a Russian city ​​in the Rostov Oblast in the Federal District of Southern Russia with 67,278 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located in the northwest of the oblast, just under 100 km north of its capital Rostov-on-Don , near the border with Ukraine and around 15 km west of the Rostov – Moscow railway line .

history

The settlement was founded in 1878 as the center of the farms and farms in the area and soon after became the center of coal mining in the area. The place has grown with the coal mining, so that today the suburbs are several kilometers from the center. In 1955 Gukowo received city rights.

Culture

In addition to the general education schools, there are two vocational schools, a lyceum, a mining university and an institute for economics and law. There are also two city newspapers, the Prowinzija and the Shakhtyorskaya Nedelja as well as the two television and radio companies Nika and Helios , as well as the only mining museum of its kind in the European part of Russia. Races for the Russian Rally Championship are held here every year.

The main branch of industry is still coal mining today. The extracted anthracite coal is largely exported. In addition, the food industry and wood processing companies have formed. In 2006, 368 commercial and industrial companies were registered. For several years now, the area from the lower reaches of the Don to the Sea of ​​Azov has been developed for tourism.
