East Lothian [ ˌiːstˈləʊðjən ] ( Gaelic Lodainn an Ear ) is one of 32  Council Areas in Scotland . It borders Edinburgh , Midlothian and Scottish Borders . The administrative center is in Haddington , but the largest city is Musselburgh .

East Lothian is also a traditional county known as Haddingtonshire until 1921 ; as such, it is bordered by Midlothian to the west and Berwickshire to the south.

Personalities

The painter Arthur Melville was born in 1858 in a village in what was then Haddingtonshire. According to legend, Alexander "Sawney" Bean also comes from the area . The peerage of the county was carried by the Earls of Haddington, compare George Baillie-Hamilton, 12th Earl of Haddington .
