The women's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 16th time in the 1985/86 season. At the final tournament in Frankfurt (Oder) , the hosts from ASK Vorwärts won their fourth title after 1981 , 1982 and 1984 . The Frankfurt women made the double for the second time after 1982 . As a result, TSC Berlin secured second place, participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup .

In the first main round, the teams from the GDR league and the qualified district representatives took part. From the second main round, the five company sports associations or sports associations from the GDR league were added. After the four main rounds, which were played in the knockout system , the best four teams in a qualifying tournament also played out the participants for the final tournament in the knockout system. In all rounds, the district representatives had a home advantage over higher-class teams. In the final tournament, which was played in the "everyone against everyone" mode, the winner of the qualification tournament met the five seeded sports club teams from the GDR upper league.

The main venue for the final round, which took place from May 26th to 30th, 1986, was the Ernst-Kamieth-Halle in Frankfurt (Oder) . Two games each were played in the sports hall of the 9th Polytechnic Oberschule (POS) in Eisenhüttenstadt am Diesterwegring and in Beeskow .
