history

After the area was surveyed, it was named Township No. 3, First Range North of Plymouth Claim, East of Kennebec River (T3 R1 NPC EKR) and initially Warrenstown according to Dr. John Warren of Boston, the first private landowner in the area. The settlement was organized as a plantation in 1811 and as a town on February 17, 1820 under its current name.

Land was given to Athens and St. Albans in 1821, and land was added to St. Albans in 1846. Land was given to Canaan in 1849 and to Pittsfield in 1852.
