The Palais Morass is a baroque city palace in the old town of Heidelberg , which was built in 1712. Today it houses the Palatinate Museum of the city of Heidelberg .

history

The Palais Morass owes its name to its client, the lawyer Johann Philipp von Morass , who was rector at the University of Heidelberg in 1700/1701 . He had the palace built in 1712 by the baroque architect Johann Adam Breunig on the site of the “ Elende Herberge ”, which was used as a hospital for the poor until 1693.

The property was owned by General Philipp Ludwig von Bettendorff from 1733 (sometimes not mentioned until 1746) . Its coat of arms is in the portal stone above the balcony, a second coat of arms is in the gate passage. From 1765 the city palace was owned by von Zyllenhard (t) . From 1778 to 1780, arranged by the owner Anna Juliana von Zyllenhardt , a modern ballroom in the classicism style was built. After the von Zyllenhard (t) died out in 1831, the Göler heirs sold the palace to Maximilian Joseph von Chelius , professor and founder of the Heidelberg University Hospital for Surgery , and lived there until his death in 1876.

The property, owned by the city since 1905, has been the seat of the Kurpfälzisches Museum with the city's art collections since 1906. In 1920 the building was redesigned by the architect Lohmeyer. A bank was housed on the ground floor until 1926. In 1991 a modern glass extension was built behind the museum garden.

architecture

The city palace is a ten-row, three-story, rectangular building made of red sandstone. Both the facade and the interior design were built in the style of the time, the baroque . The interior design of the ballroom on the first floor has been designed in the Louis-seize style since a renovation in 1778 . The eye-catcher of the baroque facade of the palace is its architectural design, adorned by two columns each with Corinthian capitals , flanking the arched portal on the right and left, on which the balcony of the first floor seems to rest over three rows of windows. Within the passage from the entrance portal to the inner courtyard of the palace and the adjoining garden, you can reach the upper floors of the property via an open, baroque staircase on the right.

use

The Kurpfälzisches Museum with the art collection of the city of Heidelberg has been located in the Palais Morass since 1906 . The art collection of Heidelberg Antiquities, compiled by Count Charles de Graimberg , formed the basis of the exhibits . The Heidelberger Kunstverein was established in a modern, glazed extension of the palace within the gardens, adjacent to the property's inner courtyard. There are further departments of the art museum in the extension.
