Holzen is a municipality in the northern district of Holzminden in Lower Saxony ( Germany ) and is part of the Eschershausen-Stadtoldendorf municipality . Holzen lies at the intersection of the Ith and Hils mountain ranges . The place consists of two locations , the village of Holzen and Holzen-Ith .
history
Traces of Stone Age settlement and sacrificial rituals could be found in the caves around Holzen. Finds from the Rothestein cave and a reconstructed cave entrance are exhibited in the Hanover State Museum.
Under the name Rothe, a settlement in the Wikanafeld was first mentioned in 1004 , which was in the area of the Holzener Hütte. For this reason, Holzen gives its origin 1004 and held a millennium in 2004, for which a village chronicle was published.
In the 11th and 12th centuries, the Poppenburg existed on a mountain spur north of Holzen , for which no historical record exists.
In the 18th century there was a glass factory in the village, the Holzen glass factory , which existed from 1744 to 1768. It mainly produced hollow glass in the form of bottles (bottles). After the relics were archaeologically examined between 2000 and 2005, the subsequently covered site is open to the public.
During the Second World War , the Holzen satellite camp existed in Holzen from September 1944 as a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp ( code name Hecht). The prisoners were assigned to the "Stein company" (code name for the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg ) for construction work that carried out the underground production facilities for military equipment under the management of Minette GmbH , of which the Volkswagen factory was the main shareholder . At the beginning of April 1945, the forced laborers were taken to the Buchenwald concentration camp. In addition, insisted on the Greitberg about two kilometers northeast of Holzen the prison camp Holzen six stone barracks, with about 500 prisoners in the penitentiary Hamelin was occupied. On the outskirts of Holzen there was a hut camp for Italian military internees who could move around freely.
The camps were part of the project to develop the Hils into an armaments focus in the German Reich. Since the Allies had gained air superiority over Germany in 1943, the extensive system of pits and tunnels of Deutsche Asphalt AG offered ideal conditions for the underground relocation of the armaments industry. Under the direction of Organization Todt , production facilities for the manufacture of fighter planes were created from 1944 according to the Jägerstab . More than 10,000 forced laborers were temporarily employed in over 30 camps in the Hils, with around 5,000 forced laborers being housed in the Lenn camp as the main warehouse of the armaments complex near the town of Lenne .
In 1996 there were 741 residents in the municipality.

Paths and monuments
There is a paved hiking trail around Holzen, on which parts of the old concentration camp can also be visited. In most cases, however, only the foundation walls are evidence of the former structures. Another attraction is the war memorial on the Hils. The eagle sculpture that once adorned the monument was stolen in the 1990s and has been missing since then.
Natural monuments
Natural monuments in the Ith are climbing rocks and caves, especially the Drachenwand with the great classic "Dragon Slayer" in the 7th grade of the UIAA .

The civil service school Ith (Holzen), which was located on the site of an old Wehrmacht air base, belongs to Holzen, although it is locally separated from the village. However, since it is not possible to drive directly from Holzen to the community service school (detour via Scharfoldendorf), many community service providers got lost in the village of Holen-Dorf. Since the suspension of community service, the facility has been subordinate to the Federal Office for Education and Family and is now an education center.
