Previous model Honda ST 1100 Pan European

The Honda ST 1300 Pan European [ ˈpæn ˈjʊərəˈpiən ] is a fully faired motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The Tourer was presented on September 18, 2002 at the Intermot two-wheeler fair in Munich and was sold in the same year with the sales name Pan European in Europe and a year later as the ST 1300 in North America. It was the successor to the Honda ST 1100 Pan European . Competitive models with comparable characteristics are the tourer Yamaha FJR 1300 , BMW R 1200 RT and the BMW K 1300 GT .

history

At the 33rd Tokyo Motor Show in October 1999, Honda presented the prototype of a fully faired sports tourer under the name X-Wing , powered by a six-cylinder engine in a V arrangement with 1500 cc displacement and automatic transmission. The press then speculated that the X-Wing could replace the ST 1100, which was partially confirmed when Honda introduced the new ST 1300 in Europe and Australia in model year 2002. Starting in 2003, around 2200 units were imported annually for the US market.

Model development

The ST 1300 took over some features of the X-Wing, but not the chassis. It is driven by a deep-seated four-cylinder engine in a V arrangement, which is attached to the aluminum motorcycle frame. A big difference to the ST 1100 is the use of two balance shafts for smoother running, which means that the engine can be mounted directly on the frame. The revised engine and the split fuel tank lowered the vehicle's center of gravity, making the ST 1300 less top-heavy compared to the previous model. The displacement of the liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine has been increased by 177 cubic centimeters from 1084 to 1261 compared to the previous model. The alternator was mounted between the V-shaped cylinder banks instead of behind the engine. This structural change also made the unit more compact and shorter than that of the ST 1100. The original toothed belt for driving the camshafts was replaced by a light, slim chain. The carburetor was replaced by an electronically controlled injection system (PGM-FI) with better power output and more efficient fuel consumption. A larger air filter was installed over the new injection valves , each with eight outlet openings, for greater throughput. Compared to the previous model, the five-speed gearbox is six percent shorter and has no speed-reducing overdrive . The anti-lock braking system and the combination braking system (Dual-CBS) were only available as options in the United States, whereas in Europe it was standard equipment from the A4 model series onwards. In contrast to the ST 1100, the successor model has no traction control . An electrically adjustable windshield became standard equipment from 2004.

successor

The English magazine Motorcycle News reported in 2009 that Honda will replace the ST 1300 with a new Sports Tourer with a transversely mounted V4 engine, similar to the design of the Sports Tourer Honda VFR 1200 F . In 2011 Honda announced that the development of a successor to the Pan European had been stopped.

CTX 1300

In November 2013, Honda announced the Honda CTX 1300 ( C omfort: easy driving and cornering behavior , T echnology: low fuel consumption and smoothness , e X perience: gentle acceleration and braking in a relaxed driver's position), a tourer with cruiser accents, its engine comes from the ST 1300, but has been optimized with regard to fuel consumption and torque at low speeds. The Honda CTX 700 N , its smaller sister, is the first motorcycle with a standard dual clutch transmission .

drive

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 93 kW (126 hp) and a maximum torque of 125 Nm at a speed of 6000 min −1 from a displacement of 1261 cm³ . The V-engine has a cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees. The four cylinders have a bore of 78 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 66 mm with a compression ratio of 10.8: 1. In each of the two cylinder heads of the four-stroke engine , two chain-driven, overhead camshafts rotate , which control two intake and two exhaust valves. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via gears. A hydraulically operated multi-disc clutch in an oil bath separates the engine from the claw-shift, helical-toothed cassette gearbox with five gears. In the secondary drive between the transmission output and the rear wheel, a cardan drive works as the drive shaft .

Electrics

The starter battery has a capacity of 11 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates a nominal electrical output of 742 watts.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by electronic fuel injection. Each cylinder is ignited by a transistor-controlled spark plug. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95  octane . The two-part fuel tank has a volume of 29 liters, of which 5 liters are in reserve. The average fuel consumption is 5.4 liters per 100 km at a speed of 130 km / h. The theoretical range on country roads is over 400 km.

The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and is below the emission limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard . The 4-in-2 exhaust system ends in two stainless steel rear silencers with flap control.

landing gear

The chassis is built on a bridge frame made of aluminum profiles and has a two-arm swing arm made of cast aluminum with a spring strut hinged via a lever system. The rear frame is screwed on. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a 45 mm standpipe diameter and 117 mm travel. The roadworthy weight is 321 kg, the maximum payload 196 kg and the gross vehicle weight is 519 kg.

Braking system

A hydraulically operated double disc brake decelerates on the front tire and a disc brake on the rear. All three brake discs are equipped with a three-piston floating caliper. A combination brake system called Honda CBS ( Combined Brake System ) always activates all three brake calipers when the foot or handbrake is applied. An anti-lock braking system , standard in Europe, supports the deceleration on both brakes. The six-spoke cast alloy wheels are 3.50 × 18 (front) and 5.00 × 17 (rear).

The motorcycle decelerates from 100 km / h to a standstill with an average of 8.47 m / s² and requires a braking distance of 42.3 meters.

Driving instability

The ST 1300 can tend to oscillate at speeds over 180 km / h , whereupon Honda revised the swing arm mounts and engine mounts several times.

In April 2007 the British investigating judge James Adeley announced after the motorcycle policeman David Shreeve had a fatal accident on a single-seater ST 1300 during a training drive on the M58 motorway that he would face the "serious danger" for the lives of all police chiefs in England and Wales Will warn drivers of the ST 1300 and the "catastrophic consequences" of the high-speed commuter. Later safety checks resulted in a similar accident, with the test driver suffering multiple broken bones. The UK Police subsequently withdrew their ST 1300 from service.

The RiDE Magazine reported in October 2007 that in road tests with a civilian ST 1300, the instability could be reproduced at a speed of 110 mph (177 km / h) under certain loading conditions. The test driver registered a maximum yaw movement on the rear wheel of 11 degrees per second and described the behavior as a “constant and alarming lateral movement”. The editor described the behavior as Pan Weave ( German  swivel pendulum ). The aim of the driving test was not to determine the exact cause of the yaw movement, but to confirm its existence. The article also reported that 43% of all ST 1300 owners surveyed were able to confirm the yaw movement.

The motorcycle tester Ralf Kistner describes the high-speed commuting on Bike and Media as follows:

“The speedometer needle oscillates between 230 and 245. And the Pan lets me enjoy the scenery like no other motorcycle at this speed. Woww. Then it happens suddenly. I am swung out of my pleasure gliding. A long bump in the ground triggers the notorious movements. At first only slightly, but then more and more until, as a precaution, after a quick look in the mirror, I hit the brakes two or three times. It helps. The pan slides again. "

- Ralf Kistner : Bike and Media

He concluded that "the pendulum problem could not be completely solved by Honda".

Manufacturer reaction

In August 2007, Honda America issued a recommendation regarding the appropriate selection, installation and use of equipment on ST 1300 PA police motorcycles. In it, Honda makes a clear recommendation that “qualified personnel evaluate a fully equipped motorcycle under the intended speeds and conditions before the vehicle is taken into operation.” The recommendation contained guidelines for the selection and installation of brackets, including:

  • Place the equipment as low and close to the center of the vehicle as possible.
  • Avoid exceeding the maximum permissible payload.
  • Comply with the weight limits for all tank bags and side cases.
  • Make sure the mounts and equipment on both sides of the vehicle are balanced.

In the manual under the “Loading guidelines” for the ST 1300 there is the manufacturer's note: “Even if you have loaded your motorcycle correctly, you should drive slower than normal with luggage and never faster than 130 km / h.”

A judge at the Higher Regional Court Hamm presented with judgment established on 15 May 2008, "been described ... uniform oscillations ... by an expert as unpleasant and reducing the comfort, but not classified as dangerous" the will. "Rather, the problem is inextricably linked to individual factors such as weight, driving behavior and, in particular, the subjective feelings of the customer." ( File number : 28 U 145/07).

Reviews

“From 180 km / h the load began to commute so much that express stages on German autobahns became uncomfortable. Pan fans were bitter, sometimes jumped off to the competition or just stayed on their tried and tested ST 1100. What was often forgotten: The new 1300 had this weakness, but on the other hand an enormous number of strengths such as a high-torque, cultivated four-cylinder, lots of storage space, sophisticated ergonomic adjustment options. In short: The Pan had what it takes to be the best travel machine ever. "

- Thorsten Dentges : motorcycle . Edition 22/2010

“Unfortunately, this Pan has never been able to build on the success of its first edition, although the overall construction with V4 engine and generous fairing already has its charms. The Pan is amazingly handy, but cannot keep up with the competition in terms of driving stability. "

- Till Kohlmey : Touring driver
