NGC 6861 = IC 4949 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Telescope in the southern sky . It is around 125 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 110,000 light years .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6851 , NGC 6868 , NGC 6870 , IC 4943 .

The object was discovered on July 30, 1826 by James Dunlop using a 9-inch telescope . "Rediscovered" on July 8, 1897 by Lewis Swift (registered as an IC object as IC 4949 ).
