Ian Black (swimmer)

Ian Macintosh Black (born June 27, 1941 in Aberdeen ) is a former Scottish swimmer who started for Great Britain .

At the European Championships in 1958 he had his greatest sporting moment when he won the title in the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle as well as the 200 m butterfly. He was also successful at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1958 : He won gold over 220 yards butterfly and silver over 440 yards freestyle and with the 4-by-220-yard relay. In the same year he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year .

In 1960 he finished fourth twice at the Olympic Games in Rome: over 400 meters freestyle and with the 4 x 200 meter relay.

Black set a world record on the 400-meter medley course in 1959. In addition, he swam several European records from 1958 to 1962.
